Hi, I'm trying to find a willing English speaker, preferably expat for who it's their first language, to spend time teaching an adult male basic English.

Currently living in Montellano, near the Puerto Plata airport, Sosua or POP is accessible for him or alternatively if you could travel to Montellano that would be great too. We are willing to pay for your expertise but we need quick results.

To cut a long story short, we were in the process of applying for his spouse visa to come and join me in the UK when a change to the exemption status for the Dominican Republic with regards to sitting English exams was removed due to there being a new test centre. Now his visa application has had to go on hold meaning we are currently living thousands of miles from each other and I'm unable to help him. Its not possible for me to return to DR at this moment in time so I am hoping someone else can help him for me.

If you are interested please let me know and if you need any further information before committing to this please feel free to message me privately.

Jackichan, not sure if you're taking the P*ss or being serious. He doesn't need to learn how to clap his hands and kick....and our predicament is not funny. We speak Spanish to each other and never thought he'd need English. He can not find work and neither could I so him relocating and me moving back to the UK was a matter of survival.

If you're being serious, I apologise but although this looks like a great product for a baby, for a 40 year old man...not so good thanks.

Hey don't come hard on me. I was trying to help. He has to start from somewhere, right?

You might want to start using english with the guy and have him take some internet english drills.

I'm certain you will get a good tutor to coach him through.

Cheers!

Sorry Jackichan, didn't mean to sound harsh...that's why I said if you're serious I apologise.

Let me try to explain...I am now starting to speak English to him but trying to teach someone over the phone alongside the static and the voice echo is not easy. What comes out of my mouth doesn't bare any resemblance to what he hears!! It was our intention to enrol him in school once he arrived in the UK but that's all gone down the toilet now.

I left DR in a rush because of a work opportunity that was too good to turn down. Unemployment is high here too, so when you get a chance you grab it fast. We thought he'd be following me ASAP and because he is unemployed at the moment he is now living with his mother who unfortunately doesn't have Internet access. At 74 the internet didn't really appeal to her. As for him he is a plumber...not overly computer literate because he's never needed to use one and if we needed to email or use the internet i did it.

Seriously, I'm at a loss what to do next. We need a physical human being to tutor him but its proving impossible to find anyone that's interested. I would have thought it would have been a good opportunity for someone to earn a bit of money. The test he needs to pass isn't really hard it just covers such a wide variety of subjects that you have to learn quite a lot of vocabulary. Grammar is unimportant and allowances are made for bad grammar apparently, although I have been told the test is mainly in the present tense.

Anyway thanks for your response and I apologise again if I came across rude...it wasn't my intention.

Here's my two cents. Since time aint on your side, can you find mockup tests geared towards the main exam?? Maybe you can have him thoroughly trained on the exam topics?? He will have a timeline and most likely motivated towards learning.

There are plenty of English classes in both Puerto Plata and Sosua. All he needs to do is ask around, all the mothers know. My daughter has 3 cousins and 3 aunts in classes. The teachers would welcome 1 on 1 for the money. Just have him ask around, this is not a difficult task for him.

There is a computer store in the shopping center next to the Orange Store, near Baileys. In that store, the employees will teach your husband english for 7000 pesos, three days per week, for three months. I believe the instructor's name is Hector.

My wife learned basic english there, and we then used a tutor (Norelys, an attorney) to enhance her speaking skills after the three month term. We had our U.S. visa interview last month and it was done entirely in english. Her visa was approved, and we now live in the U.S. of A.

Can you be more specific. Is that 7000 pesos per month? How long are these days? 1 hour, 2 hours? IS there a textbook or coursebook included or do students purchase it separately? If so, how much?

The cost is 7000 pesos for the course, which is around three months. They promised me a course book and a CD but did not deliver...but their teaching of english was sufficient...there was no additional cost for the books. There were handouts occassionally. The class is around 1 1/2 hours, three days per week.

Directions: Go to the Orange store near Baileys, just beyond Banco Popular. As you are at the front door of the Orange store, look to the right and you will see a food operation in the courtyard of a larger shopping area. Walk to the computer business just behind the food stand. That's the place.

Hi All

Sorry for the lapse in replying to my own thread....I've been busy fighting with the UK Home Office because the test centre that's now up and running in the DR can not facilitate the necessary test required for a spouse/partner visa (Speaking and Listening only) They only hold online testing and you have to be able to read and write in English also. Anyway that's for a different thread. I would like to thank you all for your responses both on the thread and the private messages of help.

Matilda (god bless her) sent me a link to a language school in Sosua who have agreed to give my husband one-one lessons for a really great price....starts tomorrow!! I'm going to return for a month in September before my next contract starts and hopefully by then he'll be able to speak basic English.

You people who offered to help in the private messages - I will be in touch at the end of September once we have an idea of how fast he's going to pick it up. I'm trying to get an idea of the necessary vocabulary needed, with the help of my MP here in the UK, in order to achieve an adequate score. We should then be able to structure his learning accordingly.

Your help and suggestions are really appreciated.

Thanks Sunkissed

Hi William,

It is online testing but it's done under secure test regulations.

I'd love to sit the test for him but I can't - you have to take photo ID - I'm the wrong sex and the wrong colour!!

Don't think I haven't thought about sending someone else to sit it for him though....believe me if I could find a look alike I wouldn't hesitate to pay for their services.

i sympathise with your problems.that home office is ****.stay strong good luck,i have the same hurdle to face soon so i hope you dont mind if i pm you to see you got on and if you can help me..stay strong it will all be worth it in the end..xxx

Absolutely you get in touch with me Lee.
I'm not giving up without a fight and I'm lucky that my MP here is the opposition Shadow Home Secretary so she's up for a kick ass session with the Home Office too.
I keep tying them up in knots but the buggers seem to keep worming their way out of admitting they've F*cked up big time with removing the exemption. It gives me something to do when I'm sat alone at night!

My opinion;
i am an english speaker, i have worked in a country that brings in many NON-english speaking people (to work as cleaners etc). By that i mean they can't speak one single word of english. I have met many of them (at least 40+), all of which are spanish speakers.
At the end of 3 years they can speak a broken type of english. i would not consider them fluent. by the end of six years they are more competent but not great. I think you have your work cut out for you and you may not get the results you want rapidly.
my suggestion; put him in an english teaching school 40 hours a week here in the DR.... 1 hour a week will not be enough. i would think after 2 years he would be able to pass the language test you speak of. cheers

Am I wrong in thinking that it ias a bad idea to teach a new immigrant to a country that fraud is an accepted practice?
