I downloaded this from Amazon and it was so good I read it twice.
Although I do not claim to be an expert on the history of Saint-Domingue and Louisiana, this seems to be an excellent novel about the period between the 1770's and the 1820's, first on a plantation near Cap Fran?ais (now Cap Haitien), then in New Orleans and a sugar plantation up the Mississippi from Orealns Parish.
It is a family history that focuses much of the time on a mulata slave girl belonging to a French Plantation owner.
It also has brief descriptions of Cuba during the colonial period.
Haiti, like the DR has a complicated and fantastic history.
Most Americans and many Haitians that I know seem to have the idea that one fine morning, the slaves of Haiti got really p?ssed off, overthrew their masters and then defeated Napoleon.
The actual history is far more complex.
Probably the most significant event of the Haitian Revolution from a global point of view was that it convinced Napoleon to give up on expansion of French colonies in the New World, and sold the Louisiana Purchase area to the Americans, then used the money to invade Russia.
