I have been looking for the word "expect" in Spanish, so far, I haven't found an equivalent. The dictionary has given esperar and creer. To my English hear these don't sound strong enough for what I want to say (but maybe that's my problem right). I was thinking of using insitir....any thoughts?


also, what does complacer mean? I haven't been able to find this word either.

You can say it and mean it by the way you say "lo esPEro."

I agree with Chiri: use complacer for to please.
Remember, there is not always a 100% equivalent.
Also, Latin America is not as direct as the US is culturally.

Google doesnt always translate correctly, because such programs do not take idioms into account. It really depends on the context. You might be able to use a word like "expectativa" (as in to have expectations) in order to get the sufficient connotation and emphasis in your spanish sentence.

Well, there is a difference between expecting to see a friend at a party and the boss expecting to see you at work tomorrow after you have called in sick one too many times. While I am guessing esperar works quite well for the former, the latter would need a more emphatic verb in spanish.

i also found "anticipar"--to anticipate. i think that is a far cry from expect.

No, you need to use the subjunctive.

You can't translate "I hope for" literally. It has to be "I hope that my daughter respects her grandmother".
