This is what happens when you don't/can't read new

How is it possible for anyone on this planet not to have read that Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez have contracts valued at nearly 1/2 billion dollars??
Or if they are music fans not to know that Juan Luis Guerra has a Grammy?
Or not know Oscar de la Renta?

Come on kris, if you are older than 12 years old you better start reading a LOT more, or you will be flippin' burghers for the rest of your life!!

From an amazed Hillbilly.....I mean, every news story a couple of weeks ago was about Hillery and Bill's vacation with Oscar and friends!!
Gee-whillikers!

Give the kid a little break...

Until a little while ago, I didn't know Oscar de la Renta was Dominican. I know who he is but I didn't know he was Dominican. I found out from a website someone on this board suggested to check out where there is a list of Latin entertainers, designers, actors, etc.

Let's not forget, Felipe Alou, Moise Alou.

Off Topic - the Internet & Kids

Is the Internet destroying the ability of youth to research and collect information independently? How many times have you seen post which starts out "I'm doing a school project on _____ ..."? I mean a specific question, that's one thing, but expecting a total handout from a post on an Internet message board? I'm in my early twenties and can clearly recall learning how to use the Dewy Decimal (sp?) system and card catalogs in middle school. I wonder if today's youth, with their text messaging pagers and cell phones, even know what a library is. What's even worse is that many can't even use a search engine! I'm not criticizing the last poster in particular, but rather wanted to make a general observation.

Or the other great baseball stars from years past: Rico Carty, Joaquin Andujar, Tony Pena, Manny Mota, Pedro Guerrero, Alfredo Griffin, and especially Juan Marichel.

Re: Off Topic - the Internet & Kids

Let's face it -- the Dewey Decimal System sucks! Good riddance. The Internet is an incredible research tool and I think kids should take advantage of it to the hilt. Asking on message boards, searching on Google, reading all sorts of documents that they wouldn't have access to in their little local libraries. It's a research bonanza, not a research inhibitor. And besides -- even before the Internet the lazy kids always had Cliff Notes.

Re: Off Topic - the Internet & Kids

Intersting question M,

I would say that at a junior level (K-12) it hampers learning to do in-depth research. Too many people assume that if it is on the internet, the information is good, valid, and reliable. They never have learned to sift through materials to find good sources. On the other hand, the internet is a wonderful tool for research if you have the knowledge to identify what is a legitimate source. Secondary and tertiary sources versus primary sources is still how I place value on students' research projects. I have nothing against students using internet materials if they are properly cited (and the paper shows sufficient independent thought). However, too many incoming university students never have been taught to properly dig out good source materials. It takes time to do this. Good study skills mandate advance planning and taking time to do research prior to writing a paper. Hence, the procrastinator's last minute run to the internet for answers.

Re: and what is baseball...?

Sorry, Charlie:

Baseball is big in Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Caribbean (Spanish) and Latin America, and is even growing in popularity in Europe. That covers enough geography to make these names big.
