Re: Off Topic - the Internet & Kids
Intersting question M,
I would say that at a junior level (K-12) it hampers learning to do in-depth research. Too many people assume that if it is on the internet, the information is good, valid, and reliable. They never have learned to sift through materials to find good sources. On the other hand, the internet is a wonderful tool for research if you have the knowledge to identify what is a legitimate source. Secondary and tertiary sources versus primary sources is still how I place value on students' research projects. I have nothing against students using internet materials if they are properly cited (and the paper shows sufficient independent thought). However, too many incoming university students never have been taught to properly dig out good source materials. It takes time to do this. Good study skills mandate advance planning and taking time to do research prior to writing a paper. Hence, the procrastinator's last minute run to the internet for answers.
