I am a vegetable farmer and somewhat of a Social Entrepreneurial in the US. In recent years my firm has been researching the DR as a possible location to start a new sustainable farm. By sustainable farm I mean that I have developed a model with a principal farm which will be set up in the DR, this farm will act as a training grounds for the potential employees. Employees will be trained in the agricultural process of vegetable growing, after they graduate they will be leased a specific piece of ground to start their own farm, functioning as an entity of the principal company. The grown product will then be bought back by the principal company for a mutually agreed upon price. The principal company will then sell and export these products. A portion of the profits from the principal company then go to fund a school for employee?s children or a housing development for employees, or what ever the greatest demand is.

Employees will benefit through a profitability derived from the selling of their products. They will also learn such valuable entrepreneurial skills and farming techniques. This project should create 200-300 jobs within the DR.

This type of farming is not local to the DR and I would rather not say what type of vegetable it is at this point. However, I can ensure you it is in high demand within the country. This venture would ultimately create jobs, as well as stimulate economic growth.

How do you feel the government would react to this type of venture? It would be our objective to get some sort of funding from the DR Dept of Agriculture in order to get the project off and running.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Come down and meet with the people at the Agribusiness Board (JAD). Also talk with the people at the National Council of Competitiveness-sponsored agriculture clusters.

They can tell you what is realistic about your plan.

They can suggest several farms that you can visit to learn from others experiences.

Although your business idea sounds plausable, the best advice has already been mentioned. Contact the AG. Dept.
There are many questions here that arise in reading your post.
Is this going to be an organic project? Or is the plan to come here abuse the land teach others how to abuse it, take your profits, then pack up and leave?
Also, depending on what kind of "secret" vegetable you wish to grow will decide WHERE to grow it.
I wonder what your true adjectives are. I have no problem with free enterprise, but I have a hard time seeing companies/ other institutions coming to this island and literally using it to there own personal advantage and giving nothing back to the community, the land, the country, ect ect.
We already have enough of that going on here.
