Many people are probably aware that the Dominican Republic has several native chocolate brands. What is often not known is that drinking hot cocoa for breakfast is a long held Dominican tradition going back to at least the XVII century. It predates the production and consumption of coffee on the island, first introduced by the French in Saint-Domingue (modern Haiti) in the 1700's and from there spread islandwide. Also, during the XVIII century for many decades the most consumed cocoa in Spain was from its Santo Domingo province which is the modern Dominican Republic.
There are many chocolatiers in the country, but the three largest or most well known are Hermanos Cortés (founded in Santo Domingo and has most of its sales in the Dominican Republic and in Puerto Rico), Munné, and Kah Kow (the most recent of the three).
The following are only some of the products offered by the major Dominican chocolate brands.
Many have probably seen some of the chocolate bars on sale at checkout lines in major Dominican supermarket. These are from Hermanos Cortés.
A little known fact of Kah Kow is that despite is the newest, it won several international recognitions. In 2018 two of its products won silver and bronze respectively for chocolates in the Americas. It also has several stores throughout the Dominican Republic where all the products are Kah Kow. In addition, it also has a museum of Dominican chocolate on a very old house on calle Las Damas, Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.
Also hardly known is its first presence in the United States in near the intersection of Wythe Ave and N 10th St in Brooklyn, NY.
