HI hopefully in april i will be bringing a little dog back to canada with me from the DR and i am wondering if any one has flown to canada with a dog from the La Romana airport, i have searched the DR1 and have not found any answers and i also did a search on the airport as well,, with no luck, i know it can be done from POP for sure and probably PUJ, but i am not sure about LRM, i understand there has to be a vet there at the airport to say the dog is ok to travel??

Any help is appreciated or if any one can steer me in the right direction id be greatful!!

Flying with dog

Hi:

It doesn't matter what airport you are flying out of. I assume you already made the reservation for the dog. The dog needs to be 20#s or under. You also need to buy a pet carry on bag. The dog gets put at your feet in the bag under the seat in front of you. The most important thing is that you know what the Canadian law is in bringing in a pet? What vaccinations, or documentation does the Dominican Vet need to perform to conform to Canadian law. Once you have the document in hand the hard part is done. When you get to the airport ask where the office is to have them stamp your documents for approval. Be sure the dog is with you. They just want to verify by sight. When you get to Canada and go through customs they will ask for your documents. Good luck.

I have found WestJet to be the cheapest way to fly dogs.
Mine is 65lbs and goes below in his cage for $50 R/T...$37.50 one way.

I have always flown from the US... until this last trip....when I went Toronto to el Catey.

I will be going back thru Toronto and hope somebody can post the Cdn regulations for paperwork going back into the country.
I expect its similar to the US regulations but maybe needs to in French too:glasses:.....just kidding ----- I hope.

You might want to check the time restrictions West Jet imposes. I believe that they stop flying dogs in the cargo hold March 31. We helped friends transport a dog from POP via West Jet last year, and it had to be before March 31. Wise to double check.

I had a warning coming down here.... flew in Dec 11 and my ticket back was Dec18..... the dog was staying for the winter but WestJet put a hold on animals below from Dec 18 - Jan 7 to accomodate their holiday traffic.

The seasonal issue you suggest has to do with temperature.... which here, is constant - so pretty ridiculous, but they still stop sometime for heat.

I'll check

They quoted me April 1 a few minutes ago - as the last animal in the hold date..... ouch.

My plans are for May 7..... I go back to No America..., hopefully Toronto.
Its harder to find airlines that will cope with dogs/animals.

Scramble time for me !!

We brought our 2 down last April when we moved here. They had to fly as cargo, not as luggage, because apparently the cargo area can be temp controlled whereas not so in with the bags? We used Continental, who we heard was one of the best for transporting pets. They fly in/out of POP for into Newark. Not sure about any other DR airports.

BTW, we also used a pet relo company to do this since there were connecting flights, etc. They took care of all of the paperwork, overnight boarding for the dogs, EVERYTHING! A little pricy, but it was worth it to us to make sure our pups arrived in the DR safe and sound. If you go the pet relo route, check with several and get prices. They vary widely!! We were very pleased with the one we used, so if anyone is interested in their contact info, PM me.

Good luck!

I have checked with Canadian customs and all they require is their Rabies vacc. and certificate with in the last year,, and it has to be in english or french, i know there are date restrictions on the animal being carried below in the plane because of the heat,, and probably at xmas and march break because of the hi traffic,,,

Yup ! Continental is the best for pets..... costly, but good.

Our Newark - SDQ was $300+ w/ CO compared To $37.50 w/ WestJet from Toronto and it goes cargo on CO , not baggage so a different check-in for the dog than for people.
In EWR thats a pain for a 7am or 9am flight.

Our people R/T tix were $375 on CO ... the dog was about $350 each way... Howard Hughes prices but very good service

My WestJet was perfect...BoBo the Boxer , beat me to the luggage carousel...I watched him being unloaded from my seat in row 8...thats how fast they do it.

BTW, when leaving SDQ... the dog checkout people (for the 300 pesos) is on the arrival level... so don't check in.... do a driveby below then check in upstairs.

I had to crate the dog and then go elevator down/up to clear the country.... just drive by down below.. stamp the papers and go to your flight upstairs.

Next time... I'm going in the crate.... BoBo can have my seat:bunny:
