Fonda o Bolsa

Please help me on this one, I was at one of my Dominican restaurants and ask for mi comida para lleva y tambien, quiero bolsa de plastico, y entonces mi amigo dices, en republica de dominicano nosotros dicen "fonda" no bolsa. Is this true or Es Verdad??

Funda - in the rest of the Spanish speaking world this is a pillowcase, but here it's a bag. Ask your friend what 'bolsa' means in the DR, and why you would not want a plastic one.

I think it's "funda" como una funda plastica.

I don't know about DR, but I've heard both funda or bolsa being used..

Ricardo you are asking them for a plastic scrotum,though Dominicans in NYC will certainly have heard bolsa used in the sense that they use funda -- still, in a Dominican restaurant, since most customers are going to be Dominican (Haitian too), they will all be using the word "funda."

Although, since La Bolsa is also used to refer to the stock Exchange, I wonder what term Dominicans use in this case -- anyone know?

With the people I work with--funda for bags such as take home from rest. or garbage bags, etc. Bolsa as in my brief case. He'll say to me when we are leaving my car "where is your bolsa?'
Dont know if this is correct but this man uses bolsa like that.

According to the dictionary , "bolso" (masc.) can be used for a handbag or travellling bag, but it would be odd if one were to use it to refer to one's briefcase. Anyway, "bolsa" (fem) is bag, pouch, or purse, except here where it means "scrotum."

In case it hasen't been mentioned above, the term "funda" also has a popular colloquial meaning. For example, "Quieres funda co?o?, entonces, coje funda! pow! bam! bang!..." In this sense, "funda" means a "thrashing".

Deep bag

I know being Portuguese Fonda bolsa means a deep bag. I know that Spanish and Portuguese have alot or simular words. But Bolsa can also mean a womens purse.

Briefcase is maletin, bulto would be a bag to carry things, like school bag, doctor's bag, army duffel bag, sportsbag etc. Yes Dominicans say funda, bolsa is probably used by visiting Dominicans, I use it the first few days then i use funda. but yes funda de almohada i believe is the right way to use it.
