Anyone know a foot doctor in the Sosua Cabarete area who does the PinPointe Foot laser treatment for toenail fungus?

I think I have the beginning of this.

Or anyone know whether Zeta Clear is available in the pharmacies?

Tried home remedies like Tea Tree Oil, Listerine, something that smelled like formaldehyde (?)

Thanks
Ro

My wife suffers from this since we moved here about 10 years ago. The best thing for this is to apply one drop of "Dermicol Clear" 3 times a day for as long as needed. YES, I said for as long as needed! Toenail fungus is very difficult to get rid of in this country. If you can get "Dermicol Clear Extra Strength" that would be even better. For reference, the Lab that makes "Dermicol Clear" is San Luis. A 30 mL white plastic bottle cost RD$120 delivered at our door by our local pharmacy. If your pharmacy doesn't have Dermicol clear, do not buy the regular Dermicol . My wife tells me that the regular (dark) Dermicol doesn't work well on toenail fungus. She also tells me that it takes about 45 day (perhaps a bit longer) to actually kill the fungus and she noticed some skin shedding (peeling) on the treated toe.

Is this a product of the DR or can I get it in the States?

Thanks

You can also treat the fungus with Ketzole (generic name Ketoconazole). The treatment consist of taking one Ketzole tablet daily for 7 day and applying Ketzole cream 3 times a day.

One 20 mg tube of Ketzole cream retails for RD$270 and a box of 10 Ketzole tablet retails for RD$350. Be advised that I'm not a medical doctor and this informations is provided for reference only. Please consult your Podiatrists before engaging in any treatment.

Dermicol is a Dominican product manufactured locally in DR by San Luis lab. I don't know if Dermicol is available in the US but I think you can get Ketoconazole (generic name) in the US.

Thanks so much.
Your welcome! Since we are addressing fungus and feet I think it is a good idea to also address athlete's foot and skin fungal in between toes. Two of the best products I've found in DR are Tolnaftin (same active ingredient as Tinactin) and Trigentax.

Usage: wash infected area thoroughly with antiseptic soap and dry. Apply a pea size portion of cream to the infected area and gently massage until most of the cream has disappeared; twice a day. Treatment should last for about 30 days. In some cases, Trigentax appear to work a bit better than Tolnaftin. You should see some improvements in about a week. If you don't see any improvement in 10 days of use, discontinue use of the product and switch to the other. Both products are quite good but if for some reason one doesn't work for you use the other.

I can endorse the use of Tolnaftin - but for some reason I found it difficult to find the cream, it doesn't matter because the liquid solution is just as effective. Tolnaftin is made by Ratio S.A., of Santo Domingo. This recommendation is not backed by anything except my own personal experience, I've found it far more effective than anything else I've tried, but I know that it doesn't work, or doesn't suit everybody. In chronic or drastic cases there are the internally taken medications, the pills, which I am informed may have some side effects particularly on the liver, so don't buy them over the counter without appropriate medical consultation first.

NotL is right; with the medications he mentions, the symptoms appear to clear up fairly rapidly but treatment should be continued for at least two weeks after the symptoms disappear. Like all foot fungi, treating the affected area is not sufficient to be rid of the affliction, since the fungal spores can and often do remain in the footwear for a long time and reinfection can occur almost immediately after the symptoms are cleared up. So treating footwear, shoes and socks is just as important as treating the foot. The obvious solution is to destroy all the footwear you have been using whilst the infection of the foot has been active because treatment of the footwear is unreliably difficult and sometimes ineffective. If you can't or don't want to trash or burn socks, then they should be laundered in the hottest water the fabric will bear with an anti-mycotic soap or detergent and then pressed with a hot iron. This will obviously not work with synthetic fabrics but if you're prone to fungal infection you shouldn't be wearing socks made of synthetic fibres as they tend to heat the skin and cause perspiration, which will encourage the growth of the fungus. Sneakers should also be hot washed with an anti-mycotic agent and the inner sole changed frequently. Leather shoes are hardest to deal with often there is no solution other than to destroy them which may seem rather drastic especially in the case of your favourite and expensive fashion footwear. If you can find it here a good anti-mycotic dusting powder or treated talc may provide an answer. Top end sports shops may stock it - I've not tried to find it here.

I guess the above recommendations may be well known to sufferers anyway, but I thought it may be worthwhile posting in case there are any readers who may, as yet, be unaware.

you can visit a dermatologo and he will be able to advice you what medicine is best. some stuff you will apply directly on the nail but the best treatment is the one from the inside. the course of treatment will be a long one - about a month of popping a pill daily. you may try terbinafina. terbix made by sued costs 64 pesos per pill so do the math.
