For the first time in Dominican history, a Dominican legislator is convicted for drug trafficking by a US Penal Court, the Southern District Court of Florida. Miguel Andres Gutierrez Diaz won the seat as deputy for Santiago in the 2020 elections for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). He was arrested when entering Miami on June 2021, and did not resign the legislative seat until September 2023. The ruling PRM did not act either to remove him from Congress.

Gutierrez in December 2023 accepted a plea bargain deal for conspiring to traffic drugs to the United States and was sentenced to a reduced sentence of 16 years in jail in a Florida or Mississippi jail.

According to Listín Diario, dozens of people, including a priest, asked for clemency, basically saying, "Yeah, he made a mistake, but he's a good, responsible, and generous family man."

They gathered signatures and sent missives to the court in FL.

Too bad for that low life. A Federal sentence has very little time off for good behavior. He will serve 85% of his sentence. A state sentence is around 55%.
