Recently, the well known Dominican TV & radio personality, Gaby Desangles, celebrated the US independence in English on Dominican TV. This has caused a storm of criticisms by Dominicans saying that the independence of another country shouldn't be celebrated in the DR and also on doing it in English on Dominican TV.
What msny people seem to forget is that while Gaby Desangles is Dominican, has lived in Santo Domingo since she was a girl, etc; she was born in The Bronx, NYC, USA. As much that the DR is her country of origin, the USA is her country of birth. Plus, she is a dual citizen of both countries. Since when a person can be criticized for celebrating the country of her birth?
