Anyone commuting on Dominican highways should delay no more in getting the Paso Rapido automated toll pass system. The prepaid tolls system enables commuters to use the lines that are exclusive to Paso Rapido affiliates. The authorities are reducing the booths where cash is paid for the toll to motivate commuters to purchase the Paso Rapido kit. The reduction in cash lines caused major lines mainly at the Las Americas toll booth over the weekend.

The Paso Rapido kit is sold at Paso Rapido stations and is also available nationwide at the Carol Pharmacy or Total gas stations.

The sticker should be immediately installed. It requires the entering of data online for recharge purposes.Recharging is then possible using a credit card. The kit is available for RD$250 that includes RD$200 in tolls.

What the N American and European countries do, the DR has to do. It is much easier for the Dominican traveling public to pay cash at the tolls. Don't like the idea of gov't access to credit information and/or travel habits coming from electronic toll activity.

Agreed.

One of the things I do I keep a special credit card with low limits specifically to be used in situations where would not want my main credit card used.
Welcome to the beginning of the nanny state surveillance system...all children need a baby monitor don't they?

Excellent idea ..but the cars go through these gates so quickly ..
Yes, they do. It is almost a game between some motorists, but this is just Step 1.

The technology has advanced to the point they can now do Open Road Tolling. Perhaps that will come to fruition in the DR one day.

It sure beats the old system of pulling up, paying for a token at the first booth and then pulling up to deposit it in the basket of the second booth.......

Problem is not enough Dominicans have the proper banking

I was traveling in the US one time (when I was in the check cashing business) and my passenger wondered aloud why so many people were lined up to pay at the kiosks...... no E-ZPass...... called them 'Idiots'

Be careful, I said.......... those are my customers
No bank accounts , no credit cards....

Same might apply here

I was kinda thinking the exact same thing, but then if you go to SmartFit, it's credit/debit cards only. And they are packed, at least mine is in San Isidro. I think those without banking are higher % than the rest of the west, but still there are a ton that that have modern banking.

Remember, you can get a prepaid debt card and you recharge it with cash in the same way you put minutes on your phone.

They should do this either way:

1) Get EZ Pass
2) Pay at gate in long line
3) Drive through, pay by toll plate

Problem solved.
