The cost depends on the lawyer you hire to help you out. It cost me $1,000 for my first one-year temporary residency and cedula last year. You will have to renew your temporary residency now with the new law for four years before you can get a permanent resident card.

You will need to have a copy of your birth certificate and criminal records. Check the site of the Dominican consulate of your country of origin to see if apostilles are accepted.

The Cost will vary from $1000-1500 depending on the lawyer you use. You can do it with out a lawyer but you had better be fluent in Spanish and have lots of time on your hands.
We used as well as our clients and friends a lawyer in Santiago who will hold your hand through the whole process and make it relatively painless. PM me if you want her contact info.

There is a lot of information about this on the board, just use the search function.
But then, I guess, your husband is the best source...

US$2,000.00 will get you both provisional and permanent within 1 year. You need several documents that have to be validated at the Dominican Embassy of your native country.

If interested, stop by the store and I'll give you the lawyer's name & phone. You discuss that with him. I'm not involved in any way. From what I gather, Guzman & Assoc. do residencies so I by no means want to take take potential clients away from their firm. Not only have they been my attornies for over 15 years, but are good friends.

It just took me by surprise. I never heard a process go that fast. I heard they abolished the 'property residency' you know that one you get in 6months?? It took me 2years to get my PR. Good to know!

Always be careful who you use. I too took the fast track with lawyer recommended by a few board members(Not Guzman) and here I am a year and a half later just hearing the usual excuses, Canadian embassy changes, Dominican Immigration changes, Interpol backlog, yada yada and now missing my only original copy of my birth certificate... And course you only get these excuses after relentless attempts in contacting them. Have any other Canadians experienced these difficulties over the past year or two? because I am still waiting.

I will be going through the process in February and I have been told by my lawyer the foillowing: You can leave DR after completing the medical exams. We will obtain your local police certificate, legalize your documents, complete, submit and follow up your file until the Migration Department process your application (at least 6 months).

Yes I bought into a similar story, i did all medical exams in DR, Wasted my time getting my fingerprints done here as well getting police report from Canada. Lawyer said none if it was needed she deals direct with Canada for the more indepth versions. This took many months with the usual Apostle, yada yada excuses. Then the Interpol backlog excuse went from last May until last week. Now I ma awaiting the next steps which again having difficulty ascertaining what that is as constant chasing lawyer for information. When I ask where my birth certificate is and what is my file number, i just get ignored and told I am going to Immigration I will call you after that......

Another week goes by with no response from lawyer. Its now quite obvious that i wasted $500usd, which was half payment and 18 months to get nowhere while having my original birth certificate obsconded by a Dominican lawyer.

Lesson to be learned, be carefull who you use even if they come referred by others including dr1 posters, that is no indication that you will have the same results. Most lawyers here are a unique breed that work without fidicuary duty or integrity of course knowing there are no reprecussions for their actions.

No apostile in Canada as Canada is not part of the agreement. The government keeps your original of your birth certificate. My lawyer told me that up front and it is mentioned on many websites, including DR1.

if I simply moved there and rented what are the implications for me? I dont want to lose my American citizenship but in the DR am I allowed to stay a limited time like here in the USA? do people sometimes just stay and never become residents? what are the pros and cons of paying the close to 2 grand to a lawyer to get residency. I do anticipate living there at least 9 or 10 months a year when i retire in a few years
