Getting to know Moca.

It's long been on my list of places to go visit, so I just promised myself I'd do it this week o la proxima... :cheeky:

Anyway, I got my truck cleaned and fueled up and a map in the glove box but that's about it. So, some cuestions come to mind like:

  • Are there any hotels?
  • Where to go?
  • Where NOT to go?
So if anybody here would like to share some insider knowledge, I'd appreciate.

Thanks in advance! ... J-D.

There isn't a whole lot to do in Moca. They have a nice cathedral and a zoo, but the zoo is dirty and very rundown.

I recommend having a grilled breast chicken sandwhich at Pollo Feliz, one block from the La Duarte on la Cordoba I think.

I would also recommend if you have a whole day to use to go to Salcedo and then San Francisco de La Macorix.

The road is in pretty good condition and makes for a nice ride in the country. Also, don't forget to get some chicharron with fritos con agrio to top your day off. Remember too, that in the country it is ok to give people rides and you will see a fair amount of people doing it, especially students. This is a good way to help someone out and have a nice conversation.

Tabo, it's not my map... it's one that is posted on "Moca"-web page.
It's a very large file: 6.31 Mb's! It may indeed leave some video cards breathless. If you want me to, I'd be glad to e-mail you a downsized version (I downloaded and saved it). Yest PM me... J-D.

Btw... for those interested in the map. I've got it down to 2499x2499 @72dpi = 1.5 Mb (NOT on the link, the link is not MINE). It's still a very large map, but it's got all streets of the whole city with names and also the sectors named out. It seems to be some kind of military or town hall map... much, much superior to a tourist flier thing. At 1.5 Mb, it can be handled and parts printed out.

I'd be glad to mail it out to whom ever cares for it. (PM email address into the subject line OK).

Now, where do I sleep there, or do I need to get married first? :)

I'm glad you mentioned this Chip, I've been meaning to ask. Everytime I'm in the area (SFM) I notice A LOT of women with books hitchhiking. I was told they are going to class. I have never seen this elsewhere in the country (not that many women)

Can anyone clarify :bunny:

You should have lunch on the mountain road about 20 minutes outside of Moca towards Sabaneta. Hwy. #21 I believe. There are two restaurants side by side, both good with spectacular views. You are about 1000 meters up. Sometimes the clouds are below. Bring a jacket, it gets cold. I prefer the first restaurant, I think it is called El Cito, or soething like that.

There are also two new restaurants open now up there. I never tried them, so I do not know quality.

The restaurant is Cafetta....and definitely recommended along with the one next door, the other is called Il Molina, which is just past and below the above two... with a slightly different view.

I like Rancho La Cumbre, one of the higher restaurants, spectacular view of the Cibao.

When I enter Moca coming from Sabaneta de Yasica on route 21, which road on this map is the one I enter the city of Moca on?

I've passed through Moca twice on the way to Santiago, but I never stopped to look around and I always had someone with me who knew the way, but next month I'm going there alone, so I'm trying to get oriented.

Moca is well known for 3 things:
They have the best soil in the country for agriculture (yucca mocana the best)
Best town to buy a car.
And they have most beautiful and friendly women in the country.

Nightlife is great in Moca on weekends.
most clubs are located on the road from La Vega to Moca.
Palafitos (one of the best place for electronic music. clientele: youngs middle to upper class from Moca, Jarabacoa, Santiago, even from Santo Domingo)
La Mansion, discoteque. lot of beautiful women in the teraza outside.
another terraza acrros from La Mansion. (not remember the name) is also a nice place to dance.
people also hang out around the Food Shops.
I dont remember to see any good hotel. but they are around 3 Caba?as. or you can stay in Santiago (10mins).
A must to visit is La Catedral. very beautiful at night. a good place to meet people on Sunday evening. at the plaza outside.
they are several places to eat (dominican fast food, yaroa, burgers, tacos, grill meat etc) but very clean, around The Malecon, at the entrance of Moca.

Somebody asked about the girls with books asking for rides
yes, it is very comun to see that. there are university in Moca and SFM and people from other towns like Salcedo, Tenares, etc go to this university and when they leave at night 10pm they ask for rides.
It is totally safe to give a ride to any of these girls.
