Hi there. I'm going to be my friend's baby's Godmother. Can someone tell me if there is a specific present i should get for the baby? Is there a typical/traditional present that the godmothers give? the babie's parents both live in the Dominican but they are both from Haiti.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated :classic:
thanks!

Hey,

I am my very good friends sons godfather. He, as well, is Haitian-but that doesn't really matter.
What I got him, little Joel, was a gold chain and a pendant-a religious one.
It is meant as a keepsake and can be worn now and saved later.
Usually any gift is acceptible-just give one from the heart.
Congrats!

I am not aware of any traditional present for a Godparent to give; although I know it is a tradition for a Godparent to give often.:)

In the Dominican culture the godmother buys the baptismal attire for the kid. I don't know what it is in the Haitian culture. But in reality the greatest gift is that you accepted to be the godmother and am pretty sure they are overwhelmed by your acceptance. Just make sure you are heavily involved in the decision that pertains to the child. Remember, you unofficially and culturally have the same rights as the parents. If you seem them not rearing the child in the right way, it is your right to let them know. Don't be afraid to intervene in the affair of the child. It is yours basically. This is why a lot of thought and emotion go on is selecting a godparent and accepting a godchild. Congratulations.

Helly not sure where you are from but many jewlery stores in Onatrio sell Italian gold chains with the pedant of a baby being baptized and on the back it says "recordo del battesimo".

It's a great keepsake and you can get one for as little as $100 and the baptismal attire make great gifts.

I am a god mother to a little Dominican girl.
I did provided the baptismal attire for her ( as Stodgord wrote about), and also the cake for the celebration.
In this culture, it still is what it used to be in our countries, you are actually present in the childs life, so accepting to be a God mother/father here is a very big and serious decision.
