Cuba from DR

I don't think you can get there by boat. Also, we tried to island-hop the Caribbean. Unless you just want to go to Haiti or Puerto Rico, it is VERY expensive. Try CubanaAir - they may fly directly here. Most airlines from the Carribean don't stop in the DR, from what we found. It was going to cost us $700 US to fly to Jamaica, just from Puerto Rico, because no flights go directly from DR. We would've had to fly to Miami to get one country over! Good luck, let me know what you find. Thanks

Yes, you can go to Cuba from Santo Domingo but by air. Cubana de Aviaci?n offers direct flights from Santo Domingo.

Hi Mattias Like you I went to the DR last year for 3 weeks and went to Cuba for a week of that. Booked it in Puerto Plata through Turinter Tours. Flew with Cubana Airlines to Havana - stayed at Trinton Hotel. Breakfast and dinner was included and the food was delicious. Total cost was about $600 USD and included transfers to and from hotel and city tour. I believe you can also go for 3 or 4 nights. If you need more info email me.

You may have to have a hotel booked before they will llet you into Cuba. I was there two years ago and that was the law then in Cuba. Castro doesn't wnat people there earning money by taking in rooomers. You have to be registered as a hotel in order to allow outiders to stay in your home. That is all part of the communist way of life.

Where do you want to go? Cuba is not that small.

I recommend Santiago de Cuba, since climate and people are hotter and everything is MUCH cheaper than in La Havana. Flights are also less expensive, 220$ to Santiago, 300$ to La Havana, both roundtrip from Santo Domingo. If you are interested, check for available direct flights to Santiago, last month the only destination from DR was La Havana. According to my travel agency that might have changed now (Emely Tours, Av. Tiradentes Esq. Roberto Pastoriza, Plaza JR, Santo Domingo, 566-4545).

In your tourist visa you always have to put a Hotel name or a non clandestine private house (casa particular). I always put in "Hotel Santiago" and was never asked to show the reservation. In reality I stayed in a casa particular. If you want I can give you address and telephone number of houses in Santiago and La Havana all in the $20-$25 range.

Final recom: stay 10 days instead of a week!

Enjoy your stay.
