I was writing a new article for my blog Kiskeya.Life on the subject of gold in Jarabacoa as I was involved with the tourist gold digging tours in the mid-90s. This has been a big environmental issue on the island, not to mention economical as well as political. A big argument has been Barrick Gold and their operations in Pueblo Nuevo, but there are others as well.

Has the current search for gold on the island impacted anything in your area, especially environmentally?

Was my area......

We all hear about Barrick but the damage was done on the outskirts of Maimon on the way to Pueblo Viejo before that and one wonders how bad the cyanide damage is?

They shuttered the gold extraction earlier this year through. You can see the scarred land when you head from Maimon to Cotui...just outside and to ones right down in the Yamasa direction.

well, I remember going to presa de Hatillo (lake near Maimon) and seeing beautiful area with crystal clear water.

one year later when I was there, in 2013, I saw that water in lake actually changed color.....
and yeah, I was sober :p
