I saw the site about 2 weeks ago. Yes the wave pool is quite huge and coming along nicely. Most of the rooms are gutted and work is progressing.

My understanding is the date to re open is early December! I will check it out again later this week and let you know. Maybe I can sneak a few pictures too.

Hotel employees say that work is progressing as expected for first guest to arrive Dec 1.
Employees most appreciate gifts of US dollars.

Tell me what a "splash park" is and then I will find out! IT is very much a family resort they are creating. I am looking forward to seeing it when it is done.

By the way, bring school supplies (not paper it is too heavy) lots of pencils, erasers, stickers etc. We can get it to the schools.

hi,
a splash park is not a pool but a area that has lots of water fountains, sprays, tubes that spray water from the floor. they are great for the little ones.
thanks for the tip about school supplies, i will look out for things to bring.
will coloured pencils, pencils, felt tips, pens, rubbers and pencil sharpeners be ok.
thanks

Hi Planner,

I take it from what you have said you are based in the DR.
There are many of us I guess who are very excited about travelling to the HVGB. This is the first time my family and I have been to the Caribbean and can't wait. We would love it if you could keep us up to date on the progress of the refurb and photos would be a fabulous bonus. Look forward to your next post.

travel to Holiday Village

Hi,

I'm scheduled to stay at Holiday Village Golden Beach on Dec 28th. I'm hoping things will be in good shape by then. I've read a lot of reviews from people who stayed there when it was the Jack Tar resort and there were lots of complaints so hopefully the reno has solved them. I also noticed that a lot of people complained about mosquitos and recommended bringing some kind of repellant. Is this a concern at this time of year (December)? I noticed that people are talking about bringing school supplies. I have no problem bringing school supplies with me but what do you do with them when you get there to make sure they get into the right hands? I've also booked a day at Ocean World to swim with the dolphins. Is this place as great as it looks on it's web site?

I was at the hotel yesterday. It is coming along very nicely. I am not sure of whether they are on target date wise but they have made a lot of progress.

Wave pool is quite large and nearing completion. Rooms - some are more advanced then others....

I was not allowed to take pictures as they don't want that out there until it is done. Hmmmmmmmm I will ask someone higher inthe chain of command if I can post a few as an update here.....

December - Bring Mosquito spray with at least 22% or higher DEET. Yes there will be bugs. Bring an umbrella and good shoes for walking in water. IT is quite likely you will get at least one or two rain showers while you are here This applies from now through January. Bring shoes that are not slippery on tile floors. Flip flops slide all over the place. Bring your sun screen! YOu WILL need it.

The beach in front of the hotel is done and is looking really good as well!!!

Thanks for all the info planner, keep it coming. Has anyone out there been on a Jeep safari or Monster truck safari? If so which would you recommend? I am travelling with my husband and 2 kids aged 12 & 14. I read that on these you can make donations at schools that you visit, is that the case? and if so what sort of things should we bring?

Hi Telnshell,

The Monster Truck Safari has got to be a winner for a 12 & 14th year old! ( Heck im 28 and it wins for me every time ;-)
The thing is huge and a ride in that alone for your kids will be exciting - then geting to see some of the island and how life is in the DR will blow you guys away!
You do stop at schools ( or you used to - Can a vet of the board chime in if things have changed?) - once at the school - pens, pencils, paper learning tools are required - not sweets.

Hope you guys have fun - please give a trip report on your holiday when you get back - it helps us guys that are stuck in a cold and windy UK remember warmer climes!

The monster truck safari is a good one but not my personal favourite. I prefer the smaller trucks and a more personal feel.

Do not bring your school supplies on the jeep safaris. What happens is that those schools receive an over abundance of supplies and other schools get nothing. There are so many schools with nothing. Earlier in the thread Fireguy suggested donating thru Beyond the Beach. OR, if you like contact me and I can help you!

Here is what I have been able to find out. The hotel will most likely do a soft opening around Dec 1. Things are a little bit slowed up for two reasons, apparently the General Contractor passed away yesterday. And the rains we are currently experiencing are slowing things down.

The chief engineer has stepped in to speed things along and we are praying for the rains to go away!

The hotel will be open and ready for Christmas and the high season, don't worry......... More when I find things out.....
