I am arriving in the D.R in October and will be looking to buy a jeep. Can anyone tell me where i can find a good second hand dealer in the Puerto Plata area and what a 4 year old car will cost?

Thanks Ian

SUVs in the DR

Your best bets are to look in dealers' showrooms, etc. in Santo Domingo, Santiago, & in the Listin Diario classifieds. Buying an expensive SUV 3 - 4 yars old is usually safe. Listin is a good source because diplomats, staff, & wealthy Dominicans frequently use the Listin classifieds to sell their cars directly. Jeep doesn't have as good a reputation in the DR as Toyota [the best], Honda, Nissan, & Mitsubishi. Likewise Land Rover has the reputation of not holding its resale value. You might look for a diesel; diesel fuel is @ 60% of the cost of regular gas. You'll spend US 20K - 30K for soemthing decent.

My 1989 Cherokee has given me excellent service for the past 4 years of having it. I do know where there are some 2nd hand ones (& you certainly WON'T want a new one until you get used to the driving here - Picadilly Circus is a doddle campared to PoP). Your best bet would be to take a days trip round the dealers of Santiago or Santo Domingo. I haven't checked recently but the price range for a 2nd hand SUV, should be from about RD $180,000 (?7,500 - 7/8 years old) RD $250,000 (just over 10 grand) 4/5 years old.
As stated on previous occassions & e-mails, I will help IF you want. Did you receive the information about the Coastamber property? Have you been in touch with Jose Loinas of West Indies Real Estate? I am seeing him next week & can chase him if necessary. Best regards to all - Grahame.

I don't know about those prices--they seem low for here. I saw a 1993 Toyota station wagon the other day--they wanted 180,000 pesos--not even in stunning condition! Prices have really increased in the last 6 months, or so I understand/hope (I want to sell my 98 Blazer next spring...)
Happy shopping...

Re: SUVs in the DR

Here in the US I would take a Jeep Grand Cherokee over any other SUV. And I did. But in the DR Jeep has not provided the service and support due to lack of sales. So in the DR i would probobly go for a Toyota or similar Jap vehicle.

Kia dealer - Santiago

The Kia [a Korean manufacturer of an SUV called the Sportage] dealer in Santiago has @ 50 - 75 Sportages in stock. A huge inventory by local standards. I've rented 1 twice in the USA; I was pleased. He's asking 600,000 P; but, I bet he's willing to negotiate. Might be worth a sniff. I can't remember the name of the dealership; it's in downtown Santiago on a major stree. Good hunting!

Re: Thanks Prof . Good Info!

Thank you prof. I needed this as an idea what things cost there. I am most likely buying a suv there. Too much work in sending a car from here. Adding the cost of shipping, custom and the waste of time and energy, its cheqapper to buy there and its improves the economy.
