Dr. Fulgencio Severeino, director of Cardiology at theHospital Salvador B. Gautier, a teaching public hospital, warned of the alarming prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in the Dominican Republic, as reported in Hoy. He pointed out that heart diseases are the leading cause of death in the country, representing 38.5% of all annual deaths.

He added that approximately half of these deaths occur in people under 70, underscoring the urgency of addressing this health problem at all ages.

55% of this percentage of deaths is attributed to coronary artery disease, claiming the lives of...

rice, palm oil, potatoes and beer. Throw in some fast food and you can live until the nice age of 65. You may have to deal with a stroke and drool on yourself, but it's worth it to enjoy that fried chicken.

We now have a fried chicken shaming thread weekly it seems. We just discussed coronary calcium scans and statins ad nauseam. I'm fairly certain most of the members of this board understand the health benefits of eating in moderation and some daily exercise. Somewhere it should be noted that heart disease, diabetes, cancers etc do arise out of excessive alcohol and drug usage - not just fried chicken and big macs

potatoes have no negative effect on your heart, if so my Irish great grandparents wouldn't have lived past 100, which three out of four did.

carbs = fat/obesity , this is a formula for health risks. Moderation is key.

I think it would be more accurate to say the "overindulgence" or "abuse" of simple carbohydrates... blah blah. The carbohydrate is an integral part of human biochemistry and survival. Using the glycemic index and glycemic load scales, the common folk will better understand which is bad and which are not so bad. Potatoes, yes high glycemic index, which means they are converted to glucose quickly as opposed to say, broccoli, a complex carbohydrate, but also converted to glucose. The brain only recognizes sugar for its fuel. Folks that take a reduced carb diet, or carb free diet, their brains mandate breakdown of protein and fat to glucose. This, in and of itself, is a risky business as most always leads to the incomplete breakdown of stored fats to glucose. This disastrous process creates poisonous ketones to be formed, which damage the brain, among other organs.

The bottom line is always see a doctor and as we all well know and as Big says, everything in moderation. Extremes are never good.

better get a Doctors note before consuming that chilli cheese dog with Frito's on top. If you wash it down with a orange soda best to have an endocrinologist on speed dial.

Also don't forget the pernil, chicharron, and rum...ok to enjoy every once in a while but don't overindulge.
