Hato Mayor

How far is the town of Hato Mayor from Punta Cana. Looks like a cool place to visit. Anyone ever do an excursion there? Thanx

It is about 3 hours and 100 years away from Punta Cana. Whole other world over there.

Beautiful scenery, cattle ranching country, some caves and waterfalls to visit, and the town itself is a typical small remote Dominican town. There was an OK restaurant on the main square last time we visited. The roads are bad so it is quite an arduous trip from Punta Cana (closer to two than three hours IIRC).

I agree with Chiri, beautiful scenery! Very small and remote, quiet from what I recall, and YES the roads are TERRIBLE! It is about an hour drive north of SPDM [due to my SLOW driving on TERRIBLE ROADS]....good luck! But i think definately worth the trip!

Thanx everyone, I guess I should have tried to go when I was in Las Galeras, probably alot closer. Next trip will be #5 Santiago, Constanza & Jarabacoa.

Las Galeras is definately not closer to Hato Mayor than Punta Cana is. Not by road anyway. If you do a future trip centered around Santo Domingo, it is probably not much more than an hour from the airport.

No way it is close to an hour from SDQ... Even with the new expressway going north and then the Mella highway going east...I mean it is in Nasty shape.
Alternately, from Punta Cana to Higuey, then west on Highway Mella to El Seibo and then Hato Mayor.
there are other routes, none of them easy to drive....

I have only been as far as Consuelo on that road, so I don't know what it is like from there to Hato Mayor. SDQ to Consuelo is less than an hour. On the map it doesn't look that much further to Hato Mayor, but of course if the road is really bad it could take a long time.
