As I have seen others introduce themselves lately, I have decided to as well. I have been reading this forum for a few years (as many others have), and have found it very informative and entertaining. I joined a couple of months ago to post a comment, but decided not to at the time. I feel I know most of you just from reading all the posts over the months/years, so thought I would stop stalking and say hi. I live in Ottawa, have been to the DR many times (15 plus) over the years starting in 1994, and I have a relative from Montreal that has a home there and lives there 6-8 months of the year. And yes, I am also one of the people who have looked at property (both online and in person) for the last two years with the thought of moving there. Not asking for any advice (there has been plenty posted to those who do), just wanted to say hi so if I do make a comment on a post, which I have wanted to many, many times, you know who I am. Hello to all. Mike.

Thank you. Of course Puerto Plata was my first few experiences there...in the All Inclusives. Later moved on to the AI's in Punta Cana with my second wife and the kids, then back to POP. Have also been to Cabarete and Sosua to stay, but have gone on tours, and also rented cars and driven myself around the beautiful Island many times. Where Im looking at homes is in the Cabarete or Sosua areas.... I will admit, when I go, I stay in AI's, but I don't spend all my time there, just easier. My son and step daughter have been where none of their friends who have gone to the DR have seen, and they too love the Island and people.

Sounds great mike. I'd get away from the AIs more and more as you start thinking of moving there. Do you know the interior well? Samana? The southwest?

I hear Cabrera is nice and not far from pop. But I've never been.

I know you said you weren't asking for advice and you have read post here. Just want to make sure you know that some property here are on sell for a long time. Some people ask more then they can get for the property and seem to have it for for sale for years. Other properties I have seen are already sold and are still listed for sale. So it is a little harder to compare prices here because some are overpriced and others are already sold.

I am sure there hope is for someone to come to the dominican republic (not read DR1), have a lot of cash from the house they sold in their country and quickly buy a home here. It would be different here if they had low 30 year home loans like the US and other places. But they have to wait for someone with a lot of cash to buy a home here.

As I am guessing you have read here it makes more sense to rent at first and see actually were you want to live permanent. Or you might do like some and decide it is just better to always rent. It would give you time to decide how close you want to be to the beach, to the town, what kind of view, etc.

Hey Ontariomike
Welcome. I am also from Ottawa and have been to Sosua twice in the last year. Rented a condo and really enjoyed the area. Looked at lots of real estate last time but will not buying as after doing research found it was not worth doing as rentals are reasonably priced and plentiful. Do lots of research as things are not as good as they first seem or real estate agents in the DR tell you.
