I was inquiring about the rate of exchange at my bank here in Edmonton and was surprised to find out it is only 8.9 Dominican Pesos to our dollar. After reading the rate that other people have recieved I feel this is a bad rate. If anyone has exchanged money for a better rate than this PLEASE let me know where. We only have 2 weeks to do our search before we go. Desperate for Dominican Pesos.

Hi Karen...8.9 is pretty bad....Why don't you just wait and exchange your money in the D.R.? I was just in Boca Chica a week ago and got 9.3. I've been 10 times now and I've never seen it go lower than that. Have a great time!

Convert your Canadian $ to US dollars, cash or traveller's cheques. Go to an inependent exchange house (Casa de Cambio) in the nearest city to where you are staying. You will get about 15.7 pesos for each US dollar. Do not change money on the street! Go to an establishment. Go yourself, don't let a local help you or change the money for you. (They sometimes forget to come back with the pesos. If they take you to a change house they will deduct his comission from what they pay you.) If you only pay 1% to 2% to buy your US$ you will come out about 8% ahead. Figure it out. Even if the rate were better, don't buy Dominican pesos in Canada. It is illegal to bring them into the country and you could be subject to confiscation.

I was at the Flamenco Beach Resort and changed Canadian money at the bank right on the resort. The rate then (Christmas holidays) was 9.3. Have a great holiday.

Eduardo, next to Oasis supermarket, gave between 9.8 and 10 two weeks ago. It usually goes up after the holiday.

How about rates in Punta Cana, are there "casa de cambio's" or banks in the area that give a better exchange rate than the hotels? Thanks! Claire

Jan 09-16/99 Casa de Cambio just outside Casa Marina in Sosua was consistently 9.8. Others throughout Sosua ranged from 9.65 - 9.8. I had Canadian cash and had no problem - and also escaped the snowstorm in Toronto!

You will get a better exchange in the DR. I got 9.6 at Western Union yesterday.

Regarding the Canadian Dollar to Dominican Pesos - go to the black market and you will get a better rate. It is quite legal and in the open now. You see them in market places at the beach, an office across from the Brugal factory in Puerto Plata.

I just checked the currency converter at http://www.interlinkweb.com/~main/reseller-currency-exchange-rate.htm and today's rate appears to be $1 Can - 10.5 pesos.
