There are no seagulls or pelicans on the North Coast, I was told this is because of a lack of schooling bait fish in the area.

However, there are schools of Flying Fish, and there are Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Marlins in the water, that primarily feet on schooling bait fish, so what do they eat? There must be something else at play.

We have huge Albatross like things that glide above the breaking surf along the malecon in SD, have no idea what they are but they are massive.

If you drive towards Cabarete, you will find some really big birds out that way. I?ve seen many, although they might not be native to the Island, they might be migrating from up north.

The south coast has seagulls, frigate birds, pelicans. I think the frigate birds are probably what you see in Santo Domingo - as opposed to Pterodactyls!

That was the first thing I noticed arriving here over 3 years ago. The only explanation I have for this is that maybe the Dominicans have eaten most of them. Have heard stories first hand from people eating cats, owls etc and not because it's a delicacy;)

My house gets bombarded by birds that look half way between a housemartin and a swallow
Small little blighters but noisy and spectacular acrobats.

They were playing in the gusty wind today.

The reward for getting to the beaches early (South Coast) is that you get to watch the Frigate birds fish. They circle high, then lower in increasingly tight patterns until the time is right and they go crashing into the sea after a fish. Repeat until full. Cracks me up every time.

No healthy coral (in some area's, not all I guess), no fish interested in laying their eggs there, no young fish, no birds to catch them.
Same could apply for the river delta's but since I am not yet that long here I am not sure in which condition the mangrove delta's are here.

there's lots of birds, no more and no less than most places, parakeets are not considered food, nobody is out there poaching, unless it's a neighbor's chicken. if you know where to look there's all sorts birds out there, if you've seen a wild parrot fly, like an F-16 on LSD, you will always look down on people who think they should be pets. birds are mostly migratory in the carribean, different times of the year mean more or less birds. the local birds are still here, you just need to know where to look. lots of hummingbirds, lots.

I DO like that one LOL
See a lot of hummingbirds here also and in the mountains lots of kind of woodpeckers and little ones who sing beautiful.
I LOVE to think like you that this island is considered by most big sea and land birds more as a small landing spot on their migration trip and that it has nothing to do with pollution of land and/or water.

I saw 2 or 3 hummingbirds in my life before moving to Santo Trafficjam. I saw two on the same bush two days ago.

Frigate birds can't take off from water. They feed by skimming the water and snatching food from the surface.

Pelicans are the dive bombers.

What a funny bird is the pelican. His beak holds more than his belican.

On a hot day the frigate birds and pelicans ride the thermals above the water off the Malec?n. It's quite a sight.

I still say there are not a great deal of any sort of bird anywhere (maybe cattle egrets) considering the food supply of berries, nuts and lizards and the fact that they may have three breeding seasons a year...maybe they just dont need to come as near to humans as in other countries

having said that I could list a fair number of species that come into my garden , but usually only in ones or twos - I expect a lot of their eggs are lost to snakes and mongooses
