I need some information on the holidays, traditions, and special foods of the Dominican Republic. If u have some recipes or anything that would be great! Thanx!

this question gets asked periodically and there is a lot of info in the archives under food and holidays. There are some links to other websites, and this site has a section on recipes. Some of the holidays are Catholic holidays since it is a Catholic country. There are cultural traditions that are associated with life steps, weddings, deaths, puberty. "mi casa es su casa" is traditional hospitality. Carnival is a tradition that takes place before Lent that, although is similar to other preLent traditions, has a special flavor. Does anyone know of a good book that is more about culture than history?

HOLIDAYS

Stores, banks and most businesses close on: January 1, "New Year's Day;" January 6, "Epiphany" (not a holiday but observed by many companies), January 21, "Our Lady of Altagracia Day;" February 27, "Independence Day;" September 24, "Our Lady of Mercedes Day;" and December 25, "Christmas Day." In the Dominican Republic, the following holidays will be celebrated on the closest Monday to the actual date: January 6, "Epiphany" January 26;"Juan Pablo Duarte's Birthday;" May 1, "Labor Day;" August 16, "Dominican Restoration Day;" November 6, "Constitution Day." "Good Friday" and "Corpus Christi Day" do not have fixed dates.

Hi Kelly,

I also suggest that you look at the archived messages (click on old messages). Myself and others have written extensively on this subject. HTH!
