Hotel at Playa Dorada or Puerto Plata

A buddy and I are planning to go to DR for one week in early May, primarily for golf. Not really interested in the all inclusives. The ideal hotel would be moderately priced, clean, safe, on the beach and with somewhat of an authenitc feel. We do not plan to pay for female attention, but don't want to get hasseld if we bring back legitimate female companions. Cable TV not necessay, but a phone would be nice. Is AC a necessity? Any inout would be much appreciated.

Stay clear of timeshare sale people at Playa Dorada. Timeshare marketing is very unenthical in DR. They will tell you anything to get your signature on a contract or get your credit card number.

hola why do you want to go to playa dorada? If you want to play golf well yes you can, but casa de campo is much nicer.....! But if you want to go to playa dorada, most (all) hotels are all-inclusive....! It is nice, next to puerto plata....15/20 min. from the airport. Beach is not wite, but grey..... Yes you need an ac, because it is very, very warm.... I used to live there 5 years, as a tourguide, so if you have any other questions....Iam glad to answer them... Thanks for the reply. We plan to play Playa Dorada and Playa Grande twice each. We heard there was more nightlife in Playa Dorada than near Playa Grande, so we thought we would stay in Dorada and drive to Grande. How about Sousa? Also, if you don't stay at a hotel on the beach, what kind of access do you have to the beach? Can you rent beach chairs and umbrellas? Thanks again.

Sosua is a public beach. Yes, you can rent beach chairs. Not sure about umbrellas.

Wade don't blame the whole country!!

Wade...time share is the same wherever you go. I had a guy try to have me put a downpayment on my credit card...and that was in Florida..25 years ago. They are salesmen...trying to make a living thats all. John: Don't try and bring any Dominican girls to your room...the security will stop them if you do.

Did I say anything about whole country? Read my post again it says Playa Dorada. Besides, laws covering timeshares in DR are woefully inadequate to what you'd expect in the U.S. And theives are just trying to make a living too, so do we say thats ok?

I went in prepared for the pressure, I just didn't believe that a legitimate company would actually blantly lie to me.

So what are you saying I should just be quiet about having a company swindling me out $7000.00? Don't you think other people would like to made aware of these Saleman's tactics? What is the "Dorado Club"? Is that a timeshare Company?

I can understand your anger, but just so you know, we know of one couple that went through the same experience you went through here in good ol' USA (in Florida). We also know a couple from Long Island who had a bad experience with a timeshare in St. Maarten. I don't excuse the tactics in Playa Dorada, but it seems to me that "timeshare laws" are inadequate everywhere.

I have purchased a time share at hotel Heavens in 1989 and I must say it was the best thing I ever did. DR is the cheapest place to purchase time share and you can use it to exchange in mostly all countries of the world at DR prices of approx. $20.00 USF /day which relates to the maintenance fee I purchased back in 1989.

I'm not posting this to Knock the DR or the people there. The sales people at Tropicale Vacation Clubs lied to me and I don't like liars so I'm going to do everything I can to make sure their business suffers for it. I would do the same if this happened in the US.
