Depends where you wanna be, but my hotel of choice is the Nicolas Ovando in the Colonial Zone. It's in a great spot and is truly a luxury hotel. I only stay there when I can get a deal on hotwire when it's about $75. Normally, it's $150 plus, plus 22% or something like that for tourist taxes. Add that for all hotels.

Another hotel which many rave about but has fallen out of favor with me is Hotel Palacio. I'm guessing it's about $100 this time of year and it's just off El Conde. If you do book there, make sure you get a room away from the dining area and in the new wing.

When I go to SD now, I stay in apartments. There are many great deals to be had whether it's one night or lots more. But if you like being catered to in luxurious surroundings (me me me), Nicolas Ovando is tops on my list.

Save a few bucks and maybe try the Napolitano Hotel on the Malecon for about 75 per night. Nice but small rooms with beautiful ocean views. Excellent breakfast buffet, nice pool, good but overpriced restaurant on 2nd floor. Walking distance to Calle Conde in Zona Colonial. For some exercise you can walk down the mas o menos ocean lined malecon to Guibia public beach and Adrian Tropical restaurant. I would avoid the 2 for 1 drink special at the Hilton Malecon.

Last 3 times we have stayed on the Malicon, we don't care about an ocean view, see it everyday at home and don't need a pool. I will check that hotel out though too!
I will def not be going to the hilton for drinks lol :)

Sofitel/Accor has three hotels in the CZ...all mentioned here...Mercure, Frances and Nicolas de Ovando. The Nicolas de Ovando is probably the nicest and most expensive hotel in the CZ, it's also a very historic building being the former home of one of Santo Domingo's first Governors...if you can get it in your price range...take it! The Frances is almost as nice and usually quite a bit cheaper. The Mercure is fine with an awesome location, directly on the Conde, the only issue I've had is the rooms are tiny. The new Sanchez is really nice, as are many of the others, Palacio included. You'd be hard pressed to find one *over* your budget of $150 other than the Nicolas de Ovando.

Ive stayed at many of the hotels in Gazcue and on the Malecon, and the walk into the CZ isn't bad, but if it's your first time really exploring the CZ stay in the center of the CZ!
