I just got back from a two night stay at the Hotel Mercure on el Conde Santo Domingo. I have stayed there several times before but it has noticably deteriorated both in service and the physical facilities. The desk clerk was not trained or prepared to check guests in. The hot water sharply changed temperature several times. The so called Maitre D'/waiter tried to scam 500 pesos. The cost was higher than what was quoted in writing. The quality of the food was mediocre at best compounded by poor timing with plates left under a heat lamp.

Isn't the Mercure part of a French hotel chain that insists on high standards? I'm not a big fan as the rooms are very small but the times that I have stayed there the service and food were good. I'm surprised to hear that it has deteriorated.

It's part of Accor but not at the same level as their Sofitel brand.

Stayed there almost eight years ago. The rooms very very small, but nice and clean, and the food wasn't half bad. I was surprised to see a large group of gay sex tourists there, but they were actually very pleasant, respectful and quiet.

Sorry to hear things aren't going so well these days. There are, fortunately, many other good options out there, although I tend to focus my time in Santiago and along the North Coast, and have a strong preference for the Hodelpa chain, and the Plaza Naco.

Try staying at Hotel Conde Penalba. It is in the heart of the Zona Coloniale. The price is reasonable, around $65-75usd per night. The rooms are large and air conditioned. The people at check in are very efficient and they have a good restaurant with a large outdoor cafe across the square from the oldest church in the new world. You are walking distance to all the historical sights.

Mercure was the hotel I stayed in when I visited the DR for the first time. That was a couple of years ago. I found it to be adequate, although, like LTSteve, I prefer the Conde Penalba. Mercure's level of service and accommodation was not commensurate with its relatively higher price, for the other hotels in the immediate surrounding area, although the breakfast buffet was very good. This was all a couple of years ago.

Good Afternoon, To add insult to injury today when I called to find out why there was still a block of 10,000 pesos on my Banco Popular credit/debit card the manager told me it takes two weeks for the block to be removed. Even though I paid in full in cash at checkout. Never again. As my Grandmother used to say "Fool me once shame on you Fool me twice shame on me".

The first time I traveled to DR (2003) I stayed in the Mercure Hotel. The price of a room was $65-$85 a night with breakfast. You can bring a guest to your room; all the guest needed was ID. The Mercure is in the middle of the city. There are many restaurants outside the hotel and you can sip a drink and watch people go by all day. The last time I stayed in the Mercure was in April 2007. The service fell off a bit, but the pillows were so flat I developed an ache from my neck down to my back the next morning from sleeping in one position all night. That back pain took years to go away. These days if I encounter flat pillows in any hotel in the Dominican Republic, I run out and buy a pair. Plus, I stay at the Marriott Courtyard these days.
