What's the deal with this place now? I stayed there when it was an all-inclusive/time share type spot but I heard it changed into more of a mongering hotel with pool parties.

A few weeks ago I reserved there, with 50% payment in advance. At checkin they insisted on 100 US$ securitydeposit and a wristband. A nogo for me. Enough other options in S. That was for Victorian House, but I guess its the same policy for Sosua Bay, they have the same desk.
The guests seemed to be families.

I wonder if they will take reservations for Urban Noise Weekend this Memorial weekend?

That place needs a major facelift and cleaning. Nothing has been updated. I can't see how they are going to make it by just changing the name.

The stores going down to the beach look to be in poor condition, but I have been told the rooms and areas inside the gate are in good condition.

The reception area of Hotel Bellamar is now filled with "CESTUR" and Policia Nacional. Doesn't look like a good start for Hotel Bellamar.

The location and views are great.
The buildings are relics of times gone by.
A new sign and name won't help.
An investor with deep pockets is needed to re build to modern standards.
At least there would be one upscale hotel with enough beds in Sosua to stimulate family tourism.

That's right. They can close as many bars on the main street as they like, but without good, family orientated hotels in town, they will never attract the family crowd.

OK, so that was 5 hours ago. Any news?

This all transpired while I was having lunch in the hotel.

The reception area was full with at least 75 people, police, both plain clothes and uniformed, many local lawyers, local political candidates, the press, hotel employees and hotel guests.

Apparently somebody had some "legal" claims against the old Topacio Azul management and tried to "intimidate" their way into the hotel past security and into the offices and management area.

A group of about 15 "police" marched through the main corridor of the hotel to the Victorian House area where they were followed by almost as many people from the local press. After a lot of yelling back and forth and many phone calls and political posturing by a certain candidate for mayor, the group finally left and the hotel seemed to return to normal. All this nonsense lasted a couple of hours.

The claim seemed to be against the old Topacio Azul management, who are long gone. The new company of Hotel Bellamar which has nothing to do with Topacio Azul were eventually left alone. But not after a show which seems to have been somewhat orchestrated. Too many people all arriving at the same time; police, press, local politicians, local lawyers, etc.

It was on all the local news programs last night, especially on Costa Norte TV.

I think that hotel is great for location and amenities. I really hope they can get it going again, it's such a shame to see such a waste.

Other than price, I can't see why any family would choose Sosua over a PC AI, and the cost of day tours can easily make staying in Sosua more expensive than a place that has better facilities. Sosua AIs have crappy tiny beaches and tiny pools.

I can offer up some reasons why you WOULD stay in Sosua as a family:

1) Very nice large public beach, that's clean/you can swim in and not overly deep, nor containing any kind of serious current/tide
2) You can snorkel in the area
3) You can SCUBA in the area
4) You can go fishing in the area
5) Casino right in town, should that be something you are interested in (and kids are old enough to stay alone at the resort)
6) Plenty of gringo restaurants/pubs that offer a wide variety of foods/drinks that aren't loaded with putas
7) You are between Cabarete and Puerto Plata, so going to either locale is not a major cost or time syphon
8) Its not a long drive from the airport

Now mind you I am fully aware of the "evening workers" that are in Sosua, but I can say with 100% surety that there exists some of those ladies that work the area in the Playa Dorada complex, and some will even rent rooms within resorts for a few days and casually work within them

Problem with Sosua Bay Resort, Bellamar, whatever it's called is sex on the beach. If you're too cheap to pay for a room, you can do the whores on the beach at night. Then they come running into the hotel to get away from you. True story. I've woken up to find them on the floor of my room. That was years ago, but I'm sure security still gets paid off to look the other way. Or maybe they come through the front door now instead of the beach access. A family hotel. Hahaha.

So, Security is going around letting Putas into peoples room's is what you are saying?

No--what I'm saying is that the far end of the resort is easy to access from the beach, so don't leave a door or window unlocked if you're stupid enough to stay at a sleeze resort like this. And that the rooms near the beach can be rented for hours.
