How dangerous are the waters?

We will try scuba for the first time while in the DR in September and wonder what the odds of shark encounters are off Puerto Plata coastline?

You say "for the first time." You will be able to take a brief pool-type SCUBA course in your resort Stick to the many guided dives available through the resorts. Yes there are sharks, (outside the reefs) along with the usual "don't touch" stuff like fire coral on the reefs. You will probably have as much fun just snorkelling. Be sure to get advice from local divers, & a look but don't touch attitude will ensure you have a happy vacation. Bring a disposable underwater camera with a built-in flash, Canadian Bob.

I am living here for 15 years and there was no shark attack reported in that time. I am a diver and I saw sharks while diving but they were more afraid of me than I was of them.
You will have a great experience learning diving, enjoy it!!

Have a great vacation
