How do Dominicans book their vacations at resorts?

I'm planning another trip in May and this time I want my boyfriend to stay at the resort with me. Would we get a better rate if I book it through my travel agent or if he books it directly with the hotel?

I always book it directly with the hotel...... you save some $ this way and you don't have the hassels with the hotel later on

Many hotels give better rates to Dominicans, but all people staying must be able to show local residence, else the price will go back up to the tourist price. You generally won't get away with letting a Dominican do the booking and then have one of the guests be a tourist (not a resident with ID to prove it) but it has been done.

For some hotels, calling the hotel will get you the rack-rate, the highest possible rate. The best rates are often obtained through tour operators, who have pre-negotiated special pricing. It all depends on the property. For a large hotel, always check with multiple tour operators, their web site, and try contacting the hotel directly. Prices don't vary much for the very small hotels.

You can find a bunch listed at www.BocaChicaBeach.net/links.html and see the section labeled "Travel Agencies and Tour Operators".

It all depends if your boy friend owns your travel agency or the hotel.

Here's a suggestion. Why not stay at his house with him? Would save you a ton of $$$ and you'd get a taste of true Dominicana! :)

I considered this, but...

he lives with his sister and her kids and husband and I don't want to impose on them. Plus I think after being apart for a few months it would be nice to have some time alone together.

But I do love to visit the homes of my friends in DR. It's wonderful to always be welcomed in as part of the family.

Thanks for your suggestion :)

OK, cool. Am curious to know if you run into problems having a Dominican stay at the resort with you. Seems like years ago I heard that Dominicans were almost "forbidden" from staying at resorts. I hope that this is not still true.

I had no problems what so ever b/c my husband was registered with me and he also wore a bracelet to the hotel. Yes security the first few nights would ask but once they saw the bracelet on they would apolagize, so there would be no problem have done this 2x already and plan to do the same next time I go down
