How many Hours a Day does it rain?

Hi...me AGAIN!

Could anyone give me an idea of how many hours a day I should be expecting it to rain, from the 6th-14th of June? ...And at what time of the day? I've heard it's awesome weather from 10am-1pm, and then it storms - is this true? And for how long does it storm?

Thks in advance
Jason

Re: How long is a piece of string?

'DC'

I must thank you for your very intelligent & witty response to what was so obviously a stupid question on my behalf.

Then again - maybe your just a complete idiot who has nothing better to do than post banal attempts at humour onto the Net?

The following line :
'Could anyone give me an idea of how many hours a day ' may clarify to you what I was asking.

If you had to ask me how many hours a day it rains in Cape Town (SA) I'd be able to give you and IDEA, as I have an IDEA.

'How long is piece of string'....must have had people rolling the aisles with that one - well thought out.

In Azua you can count on it raining zero hours per day....unless some type of major front moves in (unlikely) and then you can count on it raining hard for 24 hours in the day.

Well, you put up a question very generally!

You did not ask where nor even in the DR or so!

Now what do you expect the readers actually to reply???? To give you the estimate of cape town????

Please check your question first before qualifing others - OK!

Re: How long is a piece of string?

Henry, (and others),

Does anyone have an idea (I won't hold you to your estimates I promise), of how many hours of rainfall can be expected in la Romana (THE SOUTH) from the 6th - 14th of June?

I have checked the average rainfall stats etc - but they are contradictory to feedback I've just received from a friend who was there last week. According to him, it rained between 1 and 4pm every day without fail - but this was on the NORTHERN side. Hence my question which seems to have confused all readers of my mail.

In trying to give you a straight answer I will say the following. I'm sure you will have ample time to crisp your skin to a fine tone of red. Rain storms typically come and go relatively quickly. You might have afternoon showers that last on and off for twenty minutes to forty minutes and then the sun is out again for awhile. On the south coast rain is possible in June. A day that it rains all day long is rare. So, bring the sun block and plan your day with major beach time in the morning and secondary beach time in the afternoon.

Re: How long is a piece of string?

Thks all,

the reason for my question is centred around diving (as apposed to 'body crisping') - ie should I bother bringing equipment when I may only get a couple of clear hours a day.

I think I have a (more) accurate idea now.

It seldom rains in June. Showers, maybe

if youare going diving, do bring your stuff.
Some of the most interesting diving is going on up near montecrtiste where some italians and other Europeans have identifies a series of historic wrecks. Off the toursit beaches your costs will be higher but i am sure that you will find some interesting places there, too.
The advice of lots of sun block is wisely taken, since you are from the UK and are probably white as a sheet....

AND, I cansee where your own experiences in the UK would have helpe you frame your question. You see Jason, unless there is a major system moving thru, it hardly ever rains for more than a few minutes at any one spot. And in Just the hurricanes are usually to the south of us..or way out inthe middle of the atlantic..

Besides 50' down, who cares if it is raining??? hehehe

P.S. Be sure to bring your local Class A Diving Certificate

How much string do U need 2 make a ball?

Hi Jason,

Mi amigo, you must admit that your query as worded was just begging for a half wit reply, the "string thing". It was VERY late/ early morning last nite and I just could not help myself. Also I knew that once we pinned down a location a decent answer would be forth coming. When we're talkn' DR weather (& precipitation) one should be aware of the extremes; aired desert - no measurable rain fall for years at a time, rain forest - lots'a rain, and alpine - will freeze your butt off (ice and a frozen slushy type of precp.). So, that being said, just how long is a piece of string?

Best regards,

. . . CES

Thks DC,

sorry abt the harsh response - was not in the mood for humour first thing after a long weekend!

Looking forward to some great diving, some hot sun -and hopefully (big hope this one) some decent waves.

Cheers

I might also add that there is no rainy season in the Dominican Republic, and while there are months that on average, there is more rain than during the rest of the year, which months varies from region to region.

Finally, there are such wide variances from year to year that one can't even reasonably predict if a month will likely be wet or dry.

Look at the below chart. It shows the rainfall for the month of February in Santo Domingo over a 20 year period. One year it is a wet month, the next it is a dry month.

All that being said, my experience over recent years is that when it does rain, it rains 2-5pm, 9-11pm, 4-9am, and rarely, all day long.

Re: Very professional post, Jim

All,

thks for the many informative, (sometimes!) humorous, and professional (Jim Hinsch) messages posted in response to my seemingly open ended initial question.

From your many varied responses it is safe to deduct the following; get on a plane, arrive in the D.R.- enjoy whatever weather I get, and forget that I work in a city like London!

Thks again - it's been entertaining!
