I am about to offer a 18 year old girl the opportunity to pursue further education at a Santo Domingo university. I know practically zero on what the process is here in the DR and I'm not sure she knows much more. I'm thinking that at this late date it would be for a semester that begins in Jan. 2023 (?).I am giving her a budget that I would want to stick with and from a brief glance on line this seems to be OK. Other than that where do I begin?

Entrance exams?
Grade scores?
Transcripts from high school?
Tutoring prep for exams?

Any and all information or direction would be appreciated.
TIA

Congrats on your undertaking.

I have done it twice now.

First and foremost, and as you likely know, the education system in the DR is challenged/plagued with lots of problems. This extends to the Universities as well.

Please do your due diligence not only on the cost..............but more importantly on the quality of the education.

Respectfully,

I've put two through a university education. A doctor and a lawyer. All I know is they graduated, and the doctor ended up getting a VISA to join her parents in New York. No feedback from the lawyer.

I still think it was money well spent.

I am going to do it in a couple years for a girl as well.
What is the approximate cost, not including room and board ?
I think she will go to Santiago, not SD

One of the benefits we offer to our employees in Sosua and Cabarete are University grants when attending public universities. The university that they currently or have attended are O&M and UASD in Puerto Plata.
They must have been with us minimum 6 months and maintain a C or better average in their course study.
We utilize the university payment plans
We pay upfront the semesters inscription cost and first installment payment and reimburse the remainder of the monthly payments when grades are received showing they attended and maintained a C or better.
It helps us maintain a better quality work team.

I previously did it in for over a decade my home country of Guyana also, but not as part of work benefits, just giving back to my hometown.

I'm working on that question now. Tomorrow at lunch I am going to have a serious convo on the idea and what course of study she would like to undertake.
She will do it in SD and she will live at home in SD Este. The plan is she will attend school full time and work Sat. and Sun. assisting her mother in their beauty salon.
I "think" there are programs available that are financially favorable to a Dominican . I am at the early statges of due diligence. Looking for us to get her started in Jan. 2023.
I hit upon a possible tutor, if needed, talking to a caddy this morning. Has a sister that might be interested in some part time work in addition to her regular job as a teacher.I am going to try and learn all I can.

Here and there
My GF at the time was in University and was struggling to find the time to go, and also to work to pay for it. So I also enquired about the costs, which turned out to be very little, to me and compared to 1st world educations, and offered to pay. She worked her butt off, got excellent grades and both she and her family were thrilled. It was really not a large amount and now she's educated and self-sufficient financially too.

Thankfully she still wants me around LOL, and now can and chooses to pay for all her own needs and desires with her income. It was a wonderful investment :D

I realize, or assume at least, that your motivation, Johne, is different, more selfless than mine.

I would suggest, however, and I have no idea how you came to choose this candidate for a scholarship, that a candidate that was really, truly interested in a university education would know or know how to find out all the answers to your questions and more themselves, and if not.....

Of course that you're verifying and learning all the costs and requirements yourself is wise, but if they are not interested or invested enough there may be better, more deserving candidates for your generosity.

It's none of my business, and forgive me if I'm out of line on this point.

Having done it myself, and put a lot of kids through regular school grades as well, I admire your involvement and generosity.

Well, I promise I will keep this board up to date as much as my desire for privacy will allow. Stay tuned as the very first meeting is tomorrow and thats when SHE decides if this is a go. (Little bird told me yesterday she is going with the idea but a little overwhelmed).

This is a good thing but:
The potential student should be able to give you all the answers her/himself. If the person is really interested in continued education should have some of these answers way before you and when you showed an interest in helping, that person should have jumped and done all the research with possible paths to discuss with you.
Yet here you are on a social forum. ???

I've often wondered about other countries giving loans to students that could never figure what the realistic costs for repaying that loan would be. Really basic 3rd grade math. Very high % fail and can't repay the loan.

???

She was well prepared. I was the one that was surprised. Named her goal for career path. Named the school. (going to visit tues). Even added in how and when will take private English lessons. More later.

I'm glad that she is so interested and prepared. It was not presented that way, initially, but it really HAS to be the case or it is likely to fail.

We plan on going "private". However I have come to learn that there are free state supported schools available for Dominicans.
