From June to August 2023, Iberia will operate a daily nonstop flight between Barajas International in Madrid (MAD) and Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International (SDQ). The flight lasts shortly over 8 hours and a half. The airline has programmed 420 flights for the summer season.

This isn't really big news. Iberia has had a pretty much daily service from Madrid to Santo Domingo for a long time , IB6501 / IB6500. During the pandemic they introduced a second flight, IB6503/4 which departed later in the day. This was pulled in September 2022 when the pandemic finished and they also reduced the frequency of their service to slightly less than 7 a week, in true Iberia style cancelling what appears to be odd services here and there. For example in June 2023, they cancelled all Sundays, plus Friday 2nd, Tuesday 13th and Tuesday 27th. In July they are not operating on the Sundays. The "news" is that from July 30th they have gone back to a 7 day a week service.

Now that Air France has stopped flying Paris - Santo Domingo there are few scheduled options from Europe so it's not a surprise that Iberia is seeing such strong demand. It will be nice if they think of restoring the 6503 flight again because it works much better for connections from other parts of Europe.

I am looking at booking with Iberia to SD instead of with BA to Punta Cana. What do you recommend ?

It was on hold for several months, I thought? Happy to hear Iberia is operating this route again. As mentioned #3, Air France stopped (permanently?). TuiFly Belgium only serves the route to Punta Cana. There are more options (if you like to travel between 34-36 hrs, and 3 stop-overs).
(BTW Air France flight CDG-SDQ had a stop over for about 2,5/3 hrs in Punta Cana)
Only benefits with Iberia (y)
