Ideas when it Rains?

I heard from a very reliable source who lives in Puerto Plata that it has rained alot lately. As most travellers, we love the sun and outdoor activities when in the DR. Any ideas for things to do when the rain is all day, all night??

Sleep in and enjoy the local nightlife, which gets really going after midnight. You would normally miss it if you get up early. Tour a cigar factory. Tour a rum factory. Visit the amber museum. Visit the casinos. Get your hair braided. Get a massage. Get a manicure and pedicure. Get drunk on rum and coke. Many resorts have boardgames available to borrow. Watch a movie in the room. You can still swim, fish, scuba, and snorkel even if it is raining.

Average rainfall in inches for Puerto Plata:

Jan 7.6, Feb 6.1, Mar 4.8, Apr 6.2, May 5.0, Jun 2.4, Jul 2.8, Aug 3.2, Sep 3.6, Oct 5.4, Nov 11.5, Dec 11.0.

Average rainfall in inches for Santo Domingo:

Jan 2.2, Feb 1.7, Mar 1.9, Apr 3.0, May 7.0, Jun 6.1, Jul 6.1, Aug 6.4, Sep 6.8, Oct 6.5, Nov 4.4, Dec 2.5

I was recently in Puerto Plata and though it did rain a lot, it rarely lasted more than an hour, even if most days were grey and overcast. However, it was still plenty warm enough to swim. And take advantage of the weather to go for some great walks - for instance the walk between Costambar and Cofresi is very nice and quite easy. Further inland or further West - out by Bahia Maimon - nature is also very beautiful. Bahia Maimon is only about 15 minutes drive from Puerto Plata but noticably drier.

And then do as Jim says: Enjoy the nightlife.

I have visited the DR several times and even if it does rain its usually not for long. If it is raining and you're in Sosua, get a massage at the Casa Marina or Family Therapy Center around the corner. Both are excellent. The main idea is to chill. Read a book, or have a cerveza or a mid-day meal. In the evening check out the discos or casinos or sit at a little bar and watch the world go by. Tranquilo, man.

Monopoly?

Surely you can think of better things to do indoors when it rains than play Monopoly! A day alone with your boyfriend, in a nice hotel, and you want to play "bored" games;-) Sounds like the honeymoon is over;-)

I was in Playa Dorada from 7-13th December 99, and the truth is that it rained a lot, almost all days.... and not only an hour (which was surprising, because last year when i was in Punta Cana it had rained only an hour...) I did lot of different things: go for a walk to Puerto Plata, spend the day in a BAr in Sosua talking with people, as the other had said, sleep and go out all night... I think that the rain is very good to make you go out from the resort and know new things...
