Will be arriving in Santo Domingo in a few days and staying there for 3 days... then going up north to various cities for the remainder of our travel. We are staying at Hotel Mercure. This is my first time to Dominican Republic and am going with my Spanish speaking husband (thank god) because I dont speak Spanish. lol. Anyway, I am looking for some good suggestions on what to do while we are there for a few days. We want to see the city and experience some good Dominican food at good prices, do some shopping, and meet the locals. We will also have a rental car so we are able to drive to other areas not close to the hotel. Any suggestions would be great.

Are you aware Hotel Mercure does not have onsite parking?

Yea, almost didnt go there because of this. My husband called them, they said they can show him a place to park that will be safe.

They have a small parking space in front of the hotel. It is a dedicated lane in front of the hotel running half the block. They have the barriers there so others do not park there. The are is under surveillance even though not too obvious to passer-byes. I stayed there several times and never had a problem to park in front of the hotel, day or night, any hour, even late at night when most of the guests were already in their rooms.

Parking

Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better about the parking. When my husband called them, the guy sounded very nice and helpful..so hopefully we will have no problems. Thanks everyone! Been checking out all the different things on this DR1 website for things to do over there! I have a good list now:) We take off to the airport in a few hours!
