The Dominican government is acknowledging the rise in obesity and joins the efforts of the Ministry of Health in motivating healthy lifestyles.

The National Institute of Student Welfare (Inabie) has launched a comprehensive nationwide campaign, “Date vida, come sano!” (Give life, eat healthy), aimed at promoting healthy eating habits among Dominican schoolchildren. The initiative is a direct response to the alarming rates of overweight and obesity among students, with a prevalence of 31%.

The campaign aligns with Inabie’s ongoing efforts to improve the nutritional quality of school meals. By eliminating sugary drinks and introducing more fruits and vegetables into school lunches, the institute has already seen significant reductions in childhood obesity. Inabie says that over the past two years, the removal of sugary beverages alone has resulted in a decrease of 18...

I remember visiting this country 20 years ago and the majority of these people were the appropriate weight for their height. Now millions are fat. It's disgusting. This decesion by the Ministry of Health is absolutely necessary and needs to be followed up with a nationwide campaign to educate parents about the underlying causes of child obesity.

Too much fast food, American culture taking over... People not longer taking two hours lunch break going home and taking siestas.

I'm curious about your siesta comment. As an American, we always heard that a siesta was normal in Mexican culture. Here too? I haven't see much of it but then again I'm not very Dominican.
Back in the 70s that I can remember most stores and business used to roll doors down for two hours lunch break, 1990 and early 2000 being my self a sales person visiting the different towns in the Cibao región I was waiting for hours for a client to open the doors at 2:00pm... Montecristi was the worse one they will open again at 3:00 pm

Those lunch break wasn't good for my rutina de visitas as I got stuck in a town sometime if I was not able to work with all my clients in the morning before heading to the next town.

this is one thing i noticed in the last 20 years. Now so many fat kids.
Adults\women too.
As we all know, cheap food, way too much cooking oil, rice, tons and tons of sugar.
I am sure the dentists are pulling lots of teeth.
Its a battle for most households to stop buying ,soft drinks, and stop making "healthy" jugo naturale.

i cant see education helping. very high tax on sugar and soft drinks might hel
but good luck with that.

My wife has been educating grade 4 through 6 on proper nutrition and diet, as well as her teachers. Some parents say the kids have been educating them, so yes a little of information is getting passed. I know many young Dominicans that have cut back on their sugar and bread consumption.
