interested in recycling

I'm exploring the options of starting a recycling collection business, starting in Santo Domingo. Particular interest in the market for PET (#1) plastic that is common in the softdrink bottles, etc.

If you have any involvement in or knowledge of recycling here, let's talk. thanks.

Hi sbostian,
In fact this whole world needs recycling badly.
Best of luck for your recycling business.
There is a big margin in plastic recycling.

I more than sure this was already discussed in a previous thread. Santiago has a recycling plant, don?t know where, but I do know its a Japanese company doing the recycling. What they do to collect the plastic bottles is pay the people that live off the landfill grounds to collect as much bottles as posible.

Believe it or not this works, because I?ve seen hundreds of huge bags filled to capacity with plastic bottles in them. After the end of every work day, the trucks drive into the landfill and haul away what ever was collected that day.

Hope this helps you.

Hooray, an environmentalist in our midst! This is a great idea...although I'm sorry I can't point you in the right direction, please do let us know when things get started for you; the DR needs more attention to this. I'm working on a compost program with a local school here in Cabrera...suerte to both of us! :)

It's really nice to consider recycling after all because that is the proper way of telling the whole world the importance of it, as well as the beneficial effect of it not only to ourselves but to everyone. Ever since I became aware of the consequences of combining biodegradable and non-biodegradable to our environment I just decided to go green and be conscious in almost everything that I'm using. It's just so nice to know that so many people are into recycling right now.

Anybody know where the plant is in Santiago? Do they take cans as well as plastic bottles? We recycle in my home and would like to continue.
The Santiago plant contact info would be great if anyone has it.

When I was a kid visiting the DR in the 60s/70s, I remember the soda bottles they used to use. They were all alike(Royal Palm??) and had different caps depending on the flavor of the soda. Heavy bottles that were used over and over again until there was a ring of worn glass where they bumped each other in the wooden crates they were shipped in. Plastic bottle are cheap, but they have a much more expensive cost on the environment.

Mmm... Red Cream Soda. That was good stuff.

shalena, the basis of recycling in DR is a bit different than USA. botellero would not take just few bottles from a random person.
what i would suggest is: put all your glass bottles into a plastic bag, the same with cans, the same with large plastic bottles (ties those with a string). leave the bag outside with your rubbish few times a month, close to the collection day, on the top of the bin or on the side. you are a rich gringa :) there are folks who live off selling recyclable materials :)
this is what i always do. i know there are people who check bins daily. most often the bag with goodies is taken before the rubbish men come. one man's trash is another man's treasure :)

I live in a college town and there is one guy who nets US$500/week during the school year just on collecting returnables from the frats at 5 cents each. He uses a van.

believe it or not there is money to be made on that in DR too, if you work on a larger scale. miesposo frequently travels to see botelleros, who buy used bottles from individuals and then sell in bulk to recycling plants. they make very decent money.
but a dude who goes around the town/beach in the morning and collects bottles will make very little, just enough to live on. but hey, at least this is honest, hard work, i have lots of respect for those guys.
