I’m feeling a bit bored at the moment, so I want to do something interesting…

Imagine you’ve just been handed a $1 million check—no strings attached! You have three exciting investment options. Which one would you choose, and why?

Would you:
  1. Open a local coffee shop that also serves lunch and dinner. It would operate Monday to Friday from 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM, employing around 10 workers. The shop would feature Café Santo Domingo coffee, and all meals would be freshly prepared by Dominican chefs.
  2. Invest in a franchise of your choice, following the corporation’s policies and procedures
  3. Build an 8-story apartment complex and convert it into an Airbnb. Each floor would feature a 2-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom unit with a living room, dining area, laundry, patio, and more. The property would also include a private fenced-in pool for guests.

I’m eager to hear your thoughts!

I would do #1 but that's because I love to eat. I would probably be my own best customer.

But if you had not done those restrictions of 1 through 3, I would open a barrio gym. I would still be my own best customer but I wouldn't gain 100 lbs.

8 story apartment complex for 1 million !? Yeah Right LOL
I would chose option # 4. Put everything into SP500 and double my $ in less than 10 years.
Just to show you an example; if you would have invested 1 milion 10 years ago;
Nominal Price Return: 194.19%

Annualized: 11.19%

Investment Grew To: $2,941,856.33

Nominal Total Return (with dividends reinvested): 251.29%

Annualized: 13.15%

Investment Grew To: $3,512,932.67

This is the correct answer.

There are also certain persons in politics who have an impressive history of investing I would follow and buy what they buy.

Does anyone think investing $1million in the DR (business, etc) is worth the risk or even financially worth it? I personally would not but maybe there are others who would.

Even though I do agree with you, these past weeks have been kind of scary.

The charts are a " Gulf of America" pattern 😆😆😆

None of the above.

The words “easy come…..easy go” come to mind.

Beyond that, Manuel01 has it right.

A boring S&P 500 index fund is the answer.

Of course, if you are looking for excitement, you could invest in DOP.

Respectfully,

Yes. But I'm not going to say where. I started with a lot less than that, BTW.

4.
25% on S&P500
25% on 16 apts apt without Airbnb. Only long term and no pool. Basic amenities.
25% on Dominican bonds at Parval or any local Puesto de Bolsa.
25% for farming and generate passive income selling tomatoes and veggies from Jarabacoa to supply supermarkets. Make a loop 'til the End.

The end.

I need to ask, why do you think Cafe Santo Domingo coffee would be a selling point for a local coffee shop?

I must admit I do know a couple of people who invested their money in businesses years ago, and they are doing well. Other than the property we own (outside of spouse's family business) that is about as far as my investing in the DR has gone.

What JD Jones posted above is a perfect example of this, but I dare to say that at least not all people who are successful in whatever they do in the DR or elsewhere are telling all the do on public forums like this.

Our old neighbor (an expat) invested millions (DOP, not USD) in POP for his business, and they are doing darn well. He did not tell me about this per se, but years living in the next house to him, kind of gave some clues... A very good, humble man. How he dressed or lived or talked, you would not gather that things are going well...

First of all, is that million in which currency? Secondly, my SIL and her family had exactly that, although not with 10 employees, a bit less. It can be done but it requires a freaking big amount of daily work, micromanaging and whatnot. We know a business owner in POP however having precisely that above, and again, it can be done but requires a huge amount of work and ambition. I would not do this.

I'd turn it down.
None of the three options you provided are worth the headache or the stress.
