I just bought an UNLOCKED iphone 4S in the USA.

I was planning on using a prepaid while in USA then using my claro plan when I return to the DR.

My concern- will my existing Blackberry Claro plan work with Iphone? and as I say this i see this iphone has a micro-sim card which is smaller than the traditional sim cards.
Does Claro or similar in DR have a sim card plan for this unlocked phone?

Yes you will be fine. You can go contract or prepaid, prepaid Inet will be a bit more expensive than postpaid plan, but can be done. Also it's important to know what carrier was IPHONE USA form? If AT&T you will be ok on Claro, but if TMOBILE than you won't get 3g speeds on Claro (but on Orange).

Make sure to write down the serial numbers because if it gets stolen the cops in DR can track it. Who ever bought your Iphone on the street will have to deal with the cops. If you update your iphone, it will lock it and wont work in DR.

Find My iPhone can be a useful app, but has had its share of criticism. If the thief knows to go into settings and disable it, its rendered useless. Serial numbers are always good to have regardless.

I have a iphone and am using a blackberry simm and contract,which by the way is cheaper than a iphone contract with claro.I cut the sim card myself,very easy...Go online for instructions.
I also had a iphone 4 stollen on the street a month ago,and forget about Dominican police tracking the phone,they have an office here in SD just for stollen phones,and the stack of paperwork reaches the ceiling@@!!!!!I have been to the office twice now,but they just look up the complaint and shrug their shoulders.
My new phone has an app called,IGOTYA,which uses a password to get into phone,and face recognition.if wrong password,a pic is taken and location and pic sent to my email immediately.It may help to catch the ladron,but the phone probably will be long gone..

Two other points:

1. Verizon will unlock your 4s after 60 days (on their plan) for use while traveling internationally. Note: This is only available for the 4s;

2. Another tracking/disabling software option is put out free by Open source anti-theft solution for your laptop, phone and tablet – Prey. It can be used on your phone, ipad, laptop. Like much of the free anti-virus software, they also offer a paid version with more features.

Thanks for all the help! I purchased this direct from Apple in USA where if you pay extra, they sell them unlocked with no provider affiliation.

I don't know about SD but in Santiago I have heard of a few people that have gotten their stolen Iphones and blackberry back. If the person with your phone cant track the person that sold it to them, then they are in trouble.

Will my Iphone 4 work if it is not unlocked if i purchase phone cards?
Thanks

No it will not work with prepaid cards if it is locked. You will be charged roaming by your original carrier. Its cheaper to buy a cheap prepaid phone and just use that to talk.
