I went to Isla Saona on my very first vacation to the DR about five years ago. I highly recommend it.

It is recommendable, make sure to bring a handkerchief so much beauty could make you cry. I hope that the Dominican government always keep the whole area as a national park.

It is sad to say that the area of Bayahibe used to be as beautiful, before they built hotels in that area.

I thought Isla Saona was worth it. The catamaran trip along the shore has some beautiful scenery, the beach on the island itself is very nice as well. On the way back we stopped at a place where a bunch of yachts were parked and held starfish, which would be fun for kids. I've been told that Isla Catalina is nicer but haven't been there.

I understand it is the most sold excursion in the DR. Actually, so many boats were going there, it was causing damage to the environment. There is the hope that selling the Santo Domingo Colonial City excursion will soon take the pressure off that excursion.
Saona is a 112 km island with no tourist hotels allowed. It is so big it would take you almost a day to go all around it by boat. The tour outfits and hotels have prepared beach areas all along to offer beach time and lunch to their customers.

Yes, it is worth going.

Is there any transport there aside from the $100 catamaran? I don't need a boat tour, and I'll be paying for two. Sounds like a good spot for AirBnB.

No tourist hotels, but any cabanas?

AnnaC went there recently, she'll probably comment when she sees this.

We were there in a restaurant when the boats started returning to Bayahibe, about 4-5 p.m. I think, there were LOTS of them, and lots of people in each. Don't know the price, but I can't imagine it was $100/PP.

We booked a tour in November 2014 from Bayahibe. It included catamaran transportation, "bebidas nacionales", lots of snacks, and a decent lunch on the island. The cost was $50US per person and maybe 20 other people on the tour with us. It's a nature preserve so void of hotels and caba?as, at least where we landed and walked about 4-5kms total on the south shore.

It's absolutely beautiful but expect to see lots and lots of tourist unless you hire a guy and a boat like we did. Only six of us and the captain was also the cook. We landed in a less busy part of the Island.

No cabanas no hotels, All boats head back before sunset but we slowed down and watched the sunset.

This is a nice video. Thanks for posting it. It looks like there are under 100 people living in this community, maybe fewer.
