Jhael Isa, director of the Trust for the Development of the Mass Transportation System of the Dominican Republic (Fitram), is on the road promoting the public-private partnership to construct the third Greater Santo Domingo metro line, connecting East and West Santo Domingo.

The 32 km line would cross the city to Las Americas International Airport. The commute that takes two hours will be cut down to 20 minutes.

The third line would be partly privately financed. The tender is expected to happen in July 2023, meaning construction could start by February 2024. The metro line is expected to take three years to go into operation. The plan is for a mass transport system that integrates train, metro, cable car and buses capable of mobilizing one million people per day. Of the 32 km, 22 will be above ground. A large stretch will run along the bluff of the Avenida Ecológica...

It seems a real miss that they aren't proposing to put a station in the Colonial Zone, given that this is the area most visited by outsiders and given the direct link to the airport. It's going to pass reasonably close, the station at Domingo Savio for example is, I guess, somewhere near to Guandules or Guachupita looking at that diagram, both are way too dangerous for tourists and therefore completely useless.

Surely there is an argument to put a spur line going to the Colonial Zone, drop down through to the top end of Santa Barbara for example, different trains on this section (more upmarket, non-stop or limited stop) with a different pricing structure. Or is that all way too logical.

Also since when did it take 2 hours to get from the Olympic stadium to the airport? 40 mins tops.

I think that the current metro system is excellent and extending this to the airport will be a game changer for Santo Domingo. I agree with Maria , it does not take 2 hours (unless there are accidents, road works or road closures), but there are times when it can take longer than 40 minutes. But the most important thing is that you don't have to worry about the frustration of driving around the city, stop lights, crazy drivers etc....that is always a good thing!

Nice - the government can build 32 KM of metro line in the busy & congested city but can build a 120 yard bridge in Cangrejo in an area currently closed to traffic.
They finally awarded the contract to Estrella and paid the landowners off near the bridge. Maybe next year the Congrejo bridge will be built.

Back to getting to the airport on the train... Seems like a good idea in itself.

This is an excellent idea to build a light rail system to the airport. The center median of Av Las Americas provides the open space for a route. The major constructions will be the Ozama crossing, intermediate stations, and pedestrian bridges to either side of the highway. The major political hurdle will be controlling the passenger transport syndicates from going berserk.

It actually is a great idea. That proposal of an Airtrain (a la JFK or similar like Atocha/Barajas in Spain) has been on the table since the first or second term of Leonel as a President.

More than the construction itself curious if this will be granted to OPRET (the state company who manages the SDQ Metro) or a private concession will be held to make it profitable.
