We're headed to Cabarete next week and want to try a different place. The reviews are positive, but words like "boutique", "temple", and "zen" concern me. Lagoon means water which could mean mosquitos. Not my kind of zen. Anyone know it? Anyone have a favorite spot? Airbnb in Barrio Blanco doesn't count. TYIA.

Kibayo Lagoon Villa Cabarete
Cute place. Has a little bar and breakfast set up and the rooms we saw were small and seem to cater to a young crowd. Set away from the main road and beach. They do various healthy and zen nature type events. All in all it appears to be a nice place for a short visit in a natural setting away from the bars ……..with a healthy vibe.
I recall a thread about La Cienaga, but I didn't follow it closely. Wasn't there an issue with squatters? I hate to sound like a former member, but is nighttime walking safe?
Yes. A bunch of shacks were built on the lagoon and were bulldozed down. I wouldn't recommend walking in any barrio at night. It's not an inherently dangerous place, but I would not recommend it and not much to see anyway.
Kibayo is on the dead end of a street that ends just shy of La Cienaga. It is close to the lagoon and mosquitos are in season. The place is set up for a young crowd. The nearest beach(walkable) is Playa Rocon which has claimed a number of victims. Not too much else in walking distance. Good luck.
La Cienaga was built on Public Park Wetlands that were filled in and "sold" to the current residents by a former, now dead mayor of Cabarete.
Should be a large number of mosquitos there.
La Cienaga is full. There are hundreds of houses. Part of the lagoon was landfilled and sold by a former Mayor. All of those lands have been built on. Afterwards some others built some more shacks near the current reduced lagoon. These were removed. All the rest of La Cienaga can be seen on Google Earth.
Government ministry finally stepped in to stop the swamp from being filled in. They literally drew a line in the samp with a very large backhoe, I believe it was.

La Cienaga has more people in shacks than any other part of Cabarete. Full it is. See how "full":
