we bought ours in santiago, about two years ago. i believe it was about 25k, not so cheap. but them memory foam was like 80 or 90 thousand pesos! i know that most large stores and plazas have a mattress shop so it is not going to be that difficult to find in SD. pricesmart has a selection too.
i am not sure about deals. if you pay cash you may get is a bit cheaper and have gratis transport thrown in. cash is the way to go :)

In Puerto Plata check Distribudors Gonzalez. A good quality queen sized mattress was 13,300 $RD.

Lots of places. Comforama, Americana Departamentos, I believe Plaza Lama. I got one at Muebleria Nacional. Bella Vista Mall has a "Sealy" outlet, if I remember correctly. Prepare yourself for sticker shock.

Let us know what you find. I'd like to buy a new one myself, but I'm afraid of the prices.

Good choices in SD - you might also want to check the big La Sirena, they have several of the "S" brands [Sealy, Serta, etc.] available, prices were competitive and decent selection. We ended up buying a Dominican made pillow-top that is very comfortable.

Followup on Conforama bed purchase.

I recommend buying nothing from these people. I paid cash 9 days ago and was guaranteed it would be delivered within 2 days. Now you get the usual DR type services "nada" sorry it will come today, no mi culpa, we don't know blah blah lies, lies... Now I have to start the fight to recover my funds... Also used a recommended Mudanza to order a 52 inch TV from Amazon. 3 months later nothing but were sorry the container its in is tied up in customs... Of course they tell me this after i had to deposit 675usd in their account so they could prepay customs and shipping fees... See the obvious trend here... Sadly this island is filled with deceitful incompetence.

That's a two step of unfortunate events. Which moving company has the problem?

I'm sorry you're having this trouble, aggravating. We also learned the hard way that whenever we're buying something that has to be delivered it's better to use a credit card. The store knows that all it takes is a phone call and they won't get paid. Of course, using the credit card is risky itself, but when you do they deliver more or less when they promise because they want your delivery signature.

With cash you're at their mercy. Next time try a deposit, with final payment on delivery. We did that with the building materials we bought in San Cristobal last March. At first they said they didn't want the driver carrying the cash, but in the end it's what we did.

We made a trip to SDQ to find a matras, bed, dining table and chairs and decided to go to Ilumel.
Ilumel has a lot of choice but you have to take the day out to see it all because everything is put together over 4 floors and there is no system in it.
We found a nice bed with matras and recliners and asked if they could deliver at the North Coast. Sure no problem but they had to call the chauffeur for the price since it is not really their route to do.
Price was alright but then it came : we had to pay everything upfront, even the driver and it took us just one minute to say NO THANK YOU.

We found a nice mattras at the North Coast in a shop between Sosua and Puerto Plata where I also saw a magnificent dining table with 8 chairs. We paid a little in advance for the matras with delivery two days later. The dining table is ours but we want it to delivered somewhere in the coming weeks but no problem, no advance asked.
The matras was delivered on time, very nice workman, put it together and we paid the rest of the invoice after checking on their request also if everything was alright.
The same day our new cooker and two nice recliners arrived which we bought at Reyes in Sabaneta, no advance payment asked. They arrived on time same day and put everything together and after inspection we paid.

Santo Domingo my ass...I know now that I can find everything I need here on the North Coast of excellent quality and with more customer service also.

I just got an appliance from Pappaterra (Gaspar Hernandez) which arrived damaged, they admitted it was damaged in their transit to my house, and they STILL haven't come to fix it. The promised to come fix it the next day so, against my better judgement, we finalized payment with them. Jerks! I'll pass on buying anything from them from here on.

"Mentir" is in the DNA here, its not frowned upon, nor discouraged. Actually its taught throughout the education system and is mandatory to conduct business. Obviously there are exceptions, BUT.......
