I'm hoping to delve into the Dominican community in Toronto for some help here. No importa se no hablan ingles, solo quiero bailar! Although if you're not Dominican, that's okay too. I'm not that picky. LOL

I've been taking lessons with my wife for over a year (off and on) in Santo Domingo. The problem is that I'm now back in Canada and my wife is in the DR, waiting for her PR. Whenever I come back to Canada it seems I forget everything I've learned. I have nobody to dance with here. :( So if you know any ladies who know how to salsa and want a partner, please send me a private message here. Thanks!

BTW - this is completely sanctioned (and encouraged) by my wife. She's tired of seeing the empty dance floor at the disco whenever the music changes to salsa. She wants US to be on it. So do I.

Hi,

You should try Alleycats on Yonge St. north of Eglinton on Monday nights. They offer lessons from 8-9ish included in your $5 cover and then its freestyle the rest of the night. There are always lots of ladies to dance with. There is also Six Degrees on Tuesdays and Babalus on Sundays I believe. So you have lots of choices. They all have websites so you can look for yourself. Good luck.

Here's a link to a salsa website in Toronto: SalsaTO.ca - Salsa Toronto Nights Events News

I would recommend taking some lessons in September when the salsa studios start up again. You'll find salsa is danced differently in Toronto. Salsa on 1 and on 2, LA style and New York style ... mambo I think. I'm not sure how you were taught in Santo Domingo, you might turn women in the opposite direction and you might start on the opposite foot than we do in Toronto.

For a non-bar like venue to practise your moves with friendly people, you can also go to the Toronto Salsa Practice at Trinity St-Paul's church on Saturday afternoons. They have a website with times for the sessions. Good luck and I hope your wife arrives soon. Cheers!

Yeah... I've noticed that Salsa is VERY different here in Toronto. I went out on Friday night and decided to just hang back and watch first... good thing I did. I honestly don't know what the style I learned is called. I'm not hitting the dance floor in a club unless I know what's going on first. I'm gonna check out that Trinity St. Paul's church suggestion. I think that'd be better for me right now. Thank you! :)

Depends where you went, there's many different styles here because of the composition of the Latin community Colombian, Cuban, Canadians who've taken lessons. I think going to some club lessons -- Alleycatz on Monday, On the Curve on Wednesday, El Rancho or Fregata on Thursday, Acrobat on Friday would be good as curlq suggested.

I have to say one thing about Dominican dancers (salsa, bachata and merengue), they're creative and they play with the music. They're VERY creative and expressive and if you picked up any of that in the DR, don't lose it. :)
