If it's dope - there ain't no hope. And the D.R., you'll do plenty of hard jail time if you happen to get caught. Be smart and forget the concoction.

Preparing Mamajuana

Kappa, assuming you already have the bottle with the leaves, follow these instructions posted a while ago by Sylvia:

1. Add GIN; leave the GIN in the bottle for about ONE WEEK. Once a day, turn the bottle in your hands so that the gin wets all the leaves; pour the dirty gin away.

2. Add RED WINE; do the same as with the gin for ONE WEEK then pour it away as well.

3. Finally, add RUM, HONEY, & SANGRIA (red wine). Shake well.

Number 1 & 2 you do ONLY ONCE!! Number 3 ALWAYS when the bottle is empty. The mamajuana will taste better and better after filling it up several times. You can fill it about 20 times, after that, the leaves will not give it that special aroma.

Re: Preparing Mamajuana

Depends on the size of the bottle. Use your best judgement. The honey and sangria give it a sweeter taste. Once again, depending on the size of the bottle, I think a tablespoon of honey is fine and maybe a little less than half of the sangria. I doubt you want to hide that Dominican Rum flavor. Out of curiousity, which one did you buy? Barcelo or Brugal?

Re: Preparing Mamajuana

I have some of the brugal dark rum, 1 of them is anejo and another is vieja anejo(appologies for spelling in advance), I also have a bottle of Brugal 151 but I take it that thats a little too strong to put in.

Out of interest how do you make sangria(I'm thick, I know)
red wine and ?

Re: Preparing Mamajuana

I never put sangria in the mamajuana, don't want to hide the Dominican rhum flavor as you said. Does the sangria change the taste a lot???

Re: Preparing Mamajuana

Sangria is a sweet , "fruity" red wine available almost anywhere wine is sold

Re: Preparing Mamajuana

Lyse, I consulted with the highest authority, my Abuelita, and she doesnt add the Red Wine to the final product either. She washes/cures the leaves with it but dumps it out. She prefers the honey and rum alone.

Also

she's never heard of adding GIN; she strictly uses the RED WINE to wash the leaves

Re: Preparing Mamajuana

kappa, there are many different ways to make sangria, sweet or not so sweet. basically any alcoholic punch with a red wine base might be called sangria. check a bar book if you have one or try this web site.

Re: Also

From dominicans friends I heard about cleaning it with gin or a cheap rhum but never heard about adding sangria. I guess I'll stick with rhum & honey. For me it's the Dominican original mamajuana recipe.
