A small matter,but don't want to let go,lol.
Wasn't paid for private Eng.classes given to a 7years old boy. Mother is avoiding phone calls and if caught offers all possible excuses with a promise to pay next week. All of this is going for the last 4 months.
The amount is not big but just want to teach her a lesson...
Where should I go?
Any advice?

Hi Ama,

If you're looking for a 'better business bureau' don't waste your time haha.

If you're going to do this alone, then be persistent and polite. Just cruise by her house at uncomfortable times, dinner time, lunch time etc, and ask in front of everyone politely.

If you've got a dominican female friend, then bring her along and let her do all the "talking". Sit back and enjoy the histrionics lol.

Try to get partial payment each visit, and promise to be back.

Just curious Ama. My girlfriend lives in the capital and needs English tutoring. Do you live in the capital and work with young adults who don't speak any English?

Forget the money. When she did not pay the first time you should have stopped the class. She would have paid. Its not worth giving her get free rent in you head over the non-payment.

A bad advice....
even that he is only 7 years old..

Next time he comes to you.

Can you learn him some new word, as F..ck you. m...f..ck......and other similar very nice English words.
or sentence like
My mother is a thief
My teacher has contacted a lawyer and police..
My teachers boyfriend is very strong ..
etc...
Be sure yo tell him to practice this sentence home and at he also say the meaning of his words in Spanish home.

And for the record
She will never pay for the 4 months she owes you.
Lesson learned.
If a student has not payed in two visits, then bye.bye, or no more lessons before the debt is payed.

Forget it - nearly every business has a proportion of non-payers.

Forget the money. When she did not pay the first time you should have stopped the class.

Or you could stop by for lunch and/or dinner everyday for a while and eat down the balance.

Instead of you teaching her a lesson, consider that you've learned one.

You can go to the nearest "Fiscal?a" and file a "querella" which is a complaint, for an "abuso de confianza." Take a record of the classes offered, and given, the fee schedule and any other evidence you have of this tutoring. Days and dates are always good.
Take a Spanish speaking friend with you to make sure that it is properly stated.

Let the law go to her door with an order to appear in court!!

(Conversely, you can tell her that you will be filing such a claim and that her lawyer fees will be much more than she owes you)

Worth a try...

maybe the mother thought her child should have been fluent after just a few lessons and thinks you did a bad job?

Small claims court works, is real pain in the rear, but hey, if you are aclimated to the DR, no problemo......the saying goes he who file first wins!

g'luck!

My experience is that at the end they will pay. Make sure to bother her about payment just after 15th or 30st each month. I think april is also the month companies are supposed to give the yearly bonus, so their might be some more money in her pockets.

And to be honest, I have become easy in letting people wait a little for their money myself here...it sticks....

I can't stop laughing. This is hilarious.
I would follow HB's advice. Filing a complaint would at least embarass her.

Hope it works out and you should just charge per lesson next time.
