Mastercard announced on 6 August 2024 that Apple Pay is now available to its cardholders in the Dominican Republic. This secure, convenient, and private payment method allows consumers to make purchases without handing over their physical card, touching buttons, or exchanging cash. Apple Pay leverages the power of the iPhone to safeguard every transaction.

Dominican Republic cardholders from Banreservas, Banco BHD, Banco Popular Dominicano, and Qik Banco Digital Dominicano can now add their Mastercard credit or debit cards to Apple Pay. To make a payment, users simply double-click the side button and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a contactless reader. Yep, it's been a reality after 5 years of hiatus on this tech (DR banks already were already to push this by 2019 but Covid stopped their plans).

And people is like crazy showing how it works.

Bravo was the first supermarket promoting the tech (both for apple and google play). Suprisingly stores like Plaza Lama and Ole banned their service because they don't want to have scammers (lol)

Influencers also are heavily promoting to pay with your phone instead of using your cards, @chicagoan14 @Dolores

I've been using apple pay here for at least 5 years. Ironically, I've only been denied once in all those years at the super pola in Sosua.

can someone explain why app!e pay is good nd what they use if for?
According to Apple “Apple Pay is safer than using a physical credit, debit, or prepaid card. Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode is required for purchases on your iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, or iPad. Your card number and identity aren't shared with merchants, and your actual card numbers aren't stored on your device or on Apple servers.”.

Otherwise it is just an alternative way of paying by card. It is also useful to have as a backup in case you forget or misplace your card.

You can pay online with Apple Pay if the online store offers the option. Some do, some don’t. For example I don’t believe Amazon offers Apple Pay as an option.
