Just in case you are wondering where to stay and what to do while in Barahona, here are some suggestions!
If you?re on a budget, several bed & breakfast type hotels offer rooms for around $20US that will include A/C in some cases. Try these Hotels in area code 809: Micheluz 524-2358, El Cacique 524-4620, Las Magnolias 524-2244, Caribe 524-4111, Guaracuya 524-4121, Barahona 524-3442.
Coral Sea Divers/Pro Aqua has partnered with Hotel Riviera Resort to offer all-inclusive dive and other water sport packages. You can visit their combined site at www.cpdive.cjb.net. Or call the Riviera at 524-5111. Rates will vary depending on the package you choose.
Casa Bonita is a beautiful but small resort nestled in the mountainside above the ocean just to the west of Barahona. They can be reached at 606-0215. Rates range from $50US to $92US.
Hotel El Quemaito was built from 1992 ? 1995 in a natural palm grove at an elevated location on the ledge of a cliff, right at the seaside on El Quemaito Beach. Their website is: http://stodomingo.freeyellow.com/hotel.htm. Rates range from $32US to $50US.
Beaches to the west of Barahona include El Quemaito, San Raphael, Los Patos, and more. Email me for photos taken during my most recent trip in January.
I?m on the board of an organization called Transformational Journeys that takes folks on trips to the DR, among other countries. Our next trip to the Barahona region is scheduled for June 30 through July 10, 2001. We?ll be working with Habitat for Humanity doing home construction work along with other projects. Price flying from the US is $1550, which includes a required $350 donation to Habitat. This insures that the cost of at least one house is covered by the trip participants.
