I recently read somewhere that Hollywood is making a movie about the Maribel sisters. Ricky Martin is playing the dictator I think. Does anyone know when it comes out and what it is called? Sorry if the spelling is really bad.

Don't know about the movie about the Mirabal sisters, but it will be based on the book "In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez. It is a very good book, a novel, but based on real life. Julia A. was raised in the DR, but emigrated to the US in 1960. She has written several very highly aclaimed books on matters relating to the DR. "How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accent" is another, her first. Also the novel "Yo!", which means I in Spanish.

She was also interviewed this weekend on WBAI in NY and has a new book. Didn't hear it and I don't know the name of it.

Lets hope Ricky Martin has no part in a movie depicting Trujillo. If he does it will be a comedy, not a serious movie. Ricky Martin is not a movie actor of any consequence to play Trujillo. About the only actor I can see playing Trujillo is the guy who played Mahatma Ghandi, I believe is Ben Kingsley. I dont know if he is still alive. But more likely, you need someone with that dictatorial leader look and personality.

And of course, I would not discount Edward James Olmos getting a role like that, but he would not make a credible Trujillo either.
Almost is too Latin-like and looks like a drug lord. Trujillo was a very elegant, portly individual with a unique personality. The actor that had a face with some resemblance to El Jefe was Cesar Romero. But Romero was mostly a comedy actor.

In the Time of the Butterflies

The movie is called "In the Time of the Butterflies" based in a book by Julia Alvarez (in Spanish "En el Tiempo de las Mariposas"), Ricky Martin will no be in the movie but Mark Anthony will. Salma Hayek will play Minerva Mirabal and Edward J. Olmos will play Trujilo, the movie will be released some time this year but I don't know when.

Ben Kingsley is very much alive. He is playing a hit man in a new movie called "Sexy Beast" you should see it he is excellent. An excellent choice for someone to play Trujillo.

In the time of the Butterflies

Hopefully Ken there was a forgotten word in there somewhere because if the movie is about the book "In the time of the Butterflies" then it HAS to be about The Mirabal sisters, since that this the whole book.

Too bad they chose Olmos. He is a great actor, but looks like a B-movie actor. In fact he started playing Banana Republic dictator parts in cheap low budget movies and that image of him playing these types and drug lords makes it difficult to a a credible Trujillo. Plus he does not meet the physical criteria of Trujillo.

Kingsley, despite his size, would have been a great choice because of his portly manners and air of authority. Plus he is one of the best actors in Hollywood.

Re: A terrible Cast for a movie like this.

They could not have chosen a worse cast for a movie like this. Salma is too sexy and looks more like a fashion model than an actress for this particular part. Thought the Mirabal sisters were nice looking women, they do not fit Hayeks type.

As For Mark Anthony. What in the world is he doing in a movie like this. I hope not playing the part of Tavares Justo? Even if he was just a singer in some musical part of the movie, he does not fit with the times, him and his voice. The voices of the 50-60s were very mellow and artists were very low key.

Re: A terrible Cast for a movie like this.

The reason people are called actors is because THEY ACT!
For the president they just need white makeup...stupid costumes and a good sense of humour....my opinion

I don't know Mr. Kingsley as an actor, but like Mr. Olmos. My memories include Miami Vice where he probably earned the drug lord / tough guy image. He does speak Spanish. I saw him in a movie called Zoot Suit, one about Moctezuma, and a movie called the Ballad of Gregorio Cortez. Hopefully with his acting, he'll be believable enough for us to appreciate the point of the story.

Re: Miami Vice/Olmos/Drug Lord

I guess you do not remember too well but Edward James Olmos was a cop on Miami Vice in fact he was the Captain. After that he was has been other characters such as a teacher in Stand and Deliver, Selena's father in Selena and many other charecters, if my memory serves me correct I do not remember him playing a drug lord. Of course if I am wrong I know there are many here who will call me out on it.
